The current newsletter is #104, the OP refers to a newsletter from last year.

EDIT - I got the Mercenary edition, and the free Eagle (flown it once!), can't recall what Beta backers got, was it a Cobra mk3?

According to the old newsletter, everyone that backed in Standard Beta is entitled to a freebie Viper Mk4. I'll post a small excerpt from my support ticket, which in turn takes an excerpt from newsletter 49:

"'There are now just 8 more days to become a Beta backer:

Being a Beta backer is the only way you will be able to play Elite: Dangerous until 16th December. In addition to that and the other existing Beta benefits such as Mercenary Edition and automatic permit to visit Sol, today we are also announcing:

25% off in-game ship insurance for life to all our Beta backers
free access to one of the 5 new ships when it’s released!

as a ‘thank you’ for all their help.'

Note two things. One: The lack of mentioning anywhere in the post that the backing had to come from Kickstarter, and Two: That the very link posted for people to 'become a beta backer' links to the FDev store, and NOT Kickstarter, which would lead anyone to believe that backing the Standard Beta would entitle them to the Viper Mk IV."

I hope FD soon actually give a firm response on this. The last thread on the topic was a confused mess. I got the feeling someone was feeding QA bad information, or QA were badly confused themselves.

Like many beta backers, I have no need for a free Viper Mk4, i passed the point of needing the cash for that a looong time ago. However, i do have a couple of friends who don't play much, one definitely a beta backer. Last time i checked, one was still flying a CM3, that being the best ship he could afford. A casual player. The free VM4 would be a nice addition for him.

Hmm, I am under the impression that the Eagle was the Mercenary Edition (which every beta backer automatically got) thing and the free Viper was connected to preordering Horizons as a bonus.
I got the Eagle, didn't get the Viper cuz I didn't preorder. And when checking my "Ships in other systems" as someone suggested before I only have one lonely Sidewinder in the system I started in.

To be fair, I don't even really know which these 5 new ships are cuz I took a bit of a break from the game. But anything other than "choose one of them" would be a disappointment for me...

And I checked the support site before but I wasn't really sure in area this falls. Not a bug, maybe an account issue... not sure where to submit a ticket to.
On the other hand, I'd rather see someone officially involved clarify this for everyone to see.

I am also pending official response from FD on my ticket for the same.
when reminded them their "promise" and asked to know what is going on they went quiet ....

We got the freagle as soon as the game launched, and it wasn't a "new ship"

The text says beta backers. It does not say "premium beta" or "alpha". I know some backers have got their free VM4. This is what makes me think there was a communication error somewhere.

Regardless, they advertised beta, so really they should stick to their statements.

Mike Brookes later confirmed it was the VM4, so no reason for anyone to be confusing this with the freagle.

So basically just hoping that FD will clear up this matter soon, make a statement to the effect that beta backers will be getting the ship sooner or later.

The Eagle Mk.II from the Mercenary Addition
The Imperial Eagle Mk.III to those who had access to the Imperial Bounty Hunter Start from the Kick Starter - even if you did not select that start
The Viper Mk.IV as the 1 of 5 Beta Beta Reward

It should not be difficult to arrange for those who are entitled to it to receive the Viper VI. All they need to do is to set a simple parameter, along the lines of "If purchase date < 16-12-2014 then Viper IV = Viper IV +1". All of the support tickets that are being submitted for this will be taking the support team away from game issues, when there are more serious problems (although a promise not being honoured is serious).

My thoughts exactly it is not like we are asking for something that is actually going to cost FD money

But now Support seems to be confused about how to give the Viper MK4

They have credited me the money to buy one but I have pointed out Michael Brookes post and the fact that some people have got theirs in game (like the freeagle) docked at a station
If i restart the game I will lose the credits and hence the ship

FD should just man up and give everyone who had brought ED before last Decembers cut off point the Viper Mk4 docked at a station somewhere
