Next ship to buy?

Ok, I have just got about 20 mill credits, I already have a MK4 viper & Cobra fitted out, I also have and using atm an Asp Exp kitted out for smuggling (made more credits today than when I first started :D).

So what is the next ship up from the asp to have? looking for multi-roll ship that can be kitted out either for fighting or trading, atm just looking for a trader load out, Any suggestions?
Thanks

If it's specifically multi-role you already have probably one of the best in the Asp Explorer. Logical next step up from there multi-role wise is probably Imperial Clipper or Python. Went for both of those, the Clipper is gathering dust in a hanger somewhere and the Python only gets out when I'm in a trading kind of mood. Otherwise I keep falling back to the Asp Explorer - fabulous ship.

EDIT - Ninja'd

I think I went T7 for a bit between Asp and Python. I hated it. Every. Single. Minute. But, managed to make a few trading credits to get to the python.

Watch out, to kit out a python nicely costs a truckload of credits. It's a great ship, but it's where the costs start to really rack up for the A grade bits and bobs.

Thanks for info, please keep em coming nice to see opinions from other ship users :), the python is a bit too expensive atm so clipper looks good, not to worried about upgrades I can work at that along the way trading, im just keeping the asp as a long distance smuggler ship, I didnt like the combat in it much as weapons kept overheating and shutting down, main con fig I use is (on all ships) 2 small gimballed pulse lasers and what ever space is left large&small gimballed cannons, works well with the viper against the python. The cobra is ok but works well against smaller ships, hard to take on a python lol.

Good advise.

Watch out OP, Python costs +50 M credits and I would never atempt to buy one under 100 Million credits. With 20 million you are still a bit far from that.

Back in the days I also moved from the ASP to the Type 7 to make more credits trading, but today ASP is one of the best ships to make cash, thanks to the various Smuggling runs that she can master.

You could kit out a Federal Dropship for trading for around 20 million - A rated FSD and power dist, drop the shields a size and you can get over 140tons of cargo. It'll easily see off most NPC interdictions. It's a step up from the AspX as a trader and a step towards the Python.

In some empire system they sell the clipper for 15% off, costing roughly only 18 million! I've been there and I'm going back there once I've done the rank grind. I don't know the system, but it's on the internet somewhere

This saved me some typing

Reasonable clipper spec is ~35M so much cheaper than the Python, but I think that the Clipper is a bit less multi-role because it's a large ship, so it can't land at outposts, but it lacks the slots of the proper big ships like the Annie, so can't easily be kitted for multiple tasks at once. And, of course, you need Imperial rank.

I stayed with the Asp for a long time, briefly purchased a vulture for some combat and pulled in a bit with that before I got sick of how fragile it was, then coined in a bit from a few community goals and sold everything to get a basic spec Python.

I think in multi-role world the Python really is the next step, but, make no mistake, the gap is wide. I think that, whilst saving up, it makes some sense to buy a combat ship to have alongside the Asp, because the Asp is a little weak in that regard.

Depends on your priorities:-

If you want to trade surface or starports, the Clipper is good.
For outposts (eg Robigo ) then the Python is the largest cargo carrier that will fit.

If you want to escape scans & Interdiction, go for the Clipper.
If you don't care about being scanned, the Python.

The Python will cost a lot to A rate, the Clipper is less expensive - but not cheap....

The Asp isn't good at combat - heat issues and it's also a big fat target for a medium ship...

Don't overlook the Federal drop ship/assaut ship range -the FAS is fast and has a moderate cargo size as well as being able to dock at outposts

The largest trader is the Cutter, but you'll need to rank up for that as well as the credits.

Fly safe

To be honest OP I think you probably have the best mid sized multi-role ship in the game.

I have a Python but it cost me 100m+ (ship + equip) to kit it out for missions/combat, however I can do just about everything in it without too many problems (except smuggling - too slow). It's a big brick but can take a real kicking.

There are a bunch of people on here who will tell you that's it's not possible to create a functional Python for any less than 150m+ - garbage - you can be effective in it for a lot less than that, probably for around 75m but just don't expect it to be uber - effective yes, uber no. In the mean time the Python can earn you credits quickly to be able to afford it's upgrades, just remember to keep enough back for trading and insurance.

One further disclaimer, I play solo or group so I'm not sure about PvP in a basic kit Python - probably best avoided if possible.

The Asp is certainly a great all rounder and I had one for over a year. I decided a few weeks ago to bite the bullet and go for the Anaconda, one reason being my mates didnt have one. :D The Anaconda does have restrictions with not being able to land on outposts and if you think a Python is expensive to upgrade you haven't seen anything yet. The Power supply costs as much as the ship itself :O. That aside it is outstanding. It can take on anything and do a whole lot of trade. While you are not ready for that just yet maybe start planning ahead. Cheers

For Trading: The Clipper. Doubles as a decent fighter as well.

The Python is much more expensive, with the upside at being able to land on outposts.

The T7 is crap in my view, it feels slow as a T9, but without its toughness and weapons.

Funnily enough I have just been having the same thoughts sat in Jameson Memorial with 56 mil burning a hole in my pocket. Mainly doing bounty hunting so finger hovering over the buy button on a FDL or a Python. Ultimately I decided to re-visit this when I have over 100 Mil to spend, back in to the Vulture for now !

Python is your next true step up. Warning though, you're going to feel like a god when in combat compared to the Asp, but you're going to feel like a 1 legged cow when it comes to travel because it just doesn't have the legs to keep up with an Asp. In the meantime I'd look at an FDS or Clipper. The Clipper is a very capable ship but don't let the low shield strength on the FDS put you off, it has one of the best hard point configurations in the game and handles itself just fine in combat. Again though, you're really going to feel gimped when traveling in anything other than a stripped anaconda after the Asp so brace yourself, because it takes a while to get used to it.

Have you considered an FAS? Or do you not have the rank? It is a superb bounty hunter even C rated, it's like a vulture on steroids.
