Newcomer / Intro Next stage of my E:D journey

Hi. First thing to say is that I am really loving playing ED, and having so much fun. The only problem with it is that I just don't have anything like enough time to play as I would like!

I am just thinking about the next stage of my 'journey' in the game, what sort of approach to take and what I want to do next. One thing I would say is that from the beginning, I have not been in any kind of hurry to get into the next ship or whatever. I've been very happy taking my time and having fun, but I am starting to think about getting a Cobra a bit earlier than I had anticipated.

My current situation is that I have my Sidewinder with a few upgrades (fixed burst lasers, B rated power distributer, slightly better FS which I think might be a D) and a Hauler, which has no weapon and a B rated power distributer, and 250,000 or so credits. I enjoy trading in the Hauler, but I am very poor at combat, though I would like to get into bounty hunting for a bit of higher paced action. I have shied away from combat really (though I was good at it in original Elite, Frontier and FFE), but I decided last night that it was time to get some practice. I went to the local RES and scored my first three bounties, the proceeds of which funded the upgrade to Burst lasers and with plenty left over. TBH, I had a lot of help from the local security services and I ran away from my final encounter (with an expert Sidewinder - no security vessels got involved in this fight) which left me with 33% hull, so that I could claim my bounties. But claiming those bounties really did feel good.

My original intention when I started the game was to spend a long time in the Sidey and not worry about any other ships for a while, honing my skills, taking advantage of the cheap rebuy cost, and gradually upgrading the ship. I quickly realised that a Hauler would be a very worthwhile investment, allowing me to keep a significant buffer of credits and build up the Sidey. I then swore I'd stick with that combo for a long time.

But of course now, with 250K credits in the bank, the Cobra is starting to tempt me. What I'm thinking is that perhaps I should alternate bounty hunting trips in the Sidey to hone my skills with earning money in the Hauler, until I reach about 600k credits, and then get a Cobra and some Cargo. I would probably get rid of the Hauler, use the Cobra as a trading vessel to bring in the cash at a faster rate, and keep upgrading the Sidey as far as it can go and using it for my bounty hunting for some time to come. I figure that sticking with the Sidewinder and trying to stick with fixed weapons should build my combat skills, and while the insurance cost of an highly upgraded Sidey is not nothing, it should still not be too off putting to taking risks in combat when you've got a decent cash buffer and a Cobra to do trading with.

Eventually, when I really feel I've outgrown the Sidewinder, I could pump some cash into the Cobra and outfit that for combat.

Does this seem like a sensible plan, or am I likely to be holding myself back by not getting into a Viper or combat equipped Cobra earlier? I ask the question from the perspective of someone who pretty much still sucks at combat and really needs to build some skills up.

I'd be very interested to hear other people's stories of their progress and adventures early in the game.

Hey CMDR
after my sidey I also went for hauler and did some trucking.
Upgraded to a cobra that I use to explore and trade in.
A few trade or rare runs then sell my moduals and kit it out for exploring. Rinse and repeat.
This weekend I've brought a viper and kitted it for combat fairly well. Now taking my first steps into combat.

If you want to practice against a CMDR Msg me and we can sort something out. Even if it's winner gets the other guy down to 50% hull or whatever so there is only repair costs...

Bucko

Hmmm, maybe not a bad idea to get some organised PVP practice at some point. I'll think about that, although I think I need to get a bit more practice against NPCs first.
I'd love to hear how it goes with the Viper. Can you post back (use this thread if you like) and let me know?

That sounds eminently sensible! I wish my students were like you!

Be aware that a Cobra maxes out at about 8.5m credits if you upgrade everything; a fully A-rated Sidewinder is worth about 1.5mcr. It's awesome fun to fly though! Those A2 thrusters make it go WHHHHEEEEEEEEEEEE! I wouldn't say you ever really "outgrow" the Sidey. Rather, I would say that it becomes a very specific tool for specific jobs.

One website that I've found to be an excellent tool for planning ship spending is http://www.edshipyard.com/ - you can choose your ship and look at how certain upgrades affect the cost, the rebuy value and the performance of the vessel. It's probably the game-related website I visit most after this one and my alliance's forum.

In terms of whether you should stick to the Sidey or get a Viper/Cobra for bounty-hunting, this comes down to your individual determination. With an A-rated Viper (see the ship in my sig - The Full Stop) and enough experience, you will have the tool to take on pretty much any ship in the game (until the Vulture comes out next week, I think) and not worry too much - the rebuy cost is still comparatively low, and it has excellent combat characteristics. The Cobra, in my opinion, isn't as effective a combat vessel, but it is much more flexible in that you can pirate effectively in it, can bounty-hunt and trade with relatively cheap changes to the configuration. It's an all-rounder that doesn't excel at any one thing, but does everything well.

I went:

Sidewinder (mostly A-rated) > Viper (mix of A- and D-ratings until I could max it out)
Adder for trade > T6 > Cobra (A-rated) > Asp (A-rated blockade runner) > T7

I currently run two Vipers in different systems (both combat-spec: no cargo, no KWS and no interdictor), the T7 near the fringes for trading (optimised for jump range and the "brave Sir Robin" approach to combat) and a Sidedwinder for bombing about in and punching above its weight in RESes.

I'm in no hurry, but I've had a lot of time recently to play.

Thanks the100thmonkey. Your comment about students made me laugh... I work in Higher Education.

Interesting to read about your ship 'progression' (don't really like using the word progression in this context - don't want to come across as someone who sees 'progressing' through ships as the main aim of the game). It's notable that you went direct from an Adder to a T6 for trading. I was wondering about going for a T6 at some point, but was considering it more as a post-Cobra trading vessel, i.e. after I've got a bit better at combat and weaponised the Cobra.

I was also interested in your comment about never really outgrowing the Sidewinder. In which situations would you say the Sidewinder is the best tool for the job?

Me too!

Well, I had the cash from bounty-hunting and there's a big gap between the Cobra and the Asp, which costs upwards of 20mcr to run at a specification that I was confident would be able to give "no" for an answer to pirates. That equates to a hard grind trading. With the current level of rewards, it's out of the question to get there in a Viper and a massive grind in a Cobra if, like me, you avoid the rares honeypot.

It's great to fly for fun - it's so light and maneuverable that I enjoy going bounty-hunting in it. Sure, I'm not going to engage an elite Anaconda with it, but for making battles more intense, twisty and ultimately satisfying at RESes, its only comparable ship is the Eagle. An A-spec Viper really doesn't have to worry about anything smaller than a Python, which I found to make RES hunting a bit more grindy than it needed to be. In the Sidewinder, you can die a lot more easily and it takes more concentration and effort to bring down all the ships, while still being able to compete. That's what I meant with "punching above its weight."

They also make great taxis for switching ships and delivery missions from the BB, although the Hauler has a far superior jump range.
