Horizons NGC 7822 Nebula - Almost in reach......Almost

I have been exploring for quite a few months now, just seeing what is out there. Spotted a few Earth-like-worlds, some nice systems, twin stars, triple stars, quadruple stars.

Then I spotted NGC 7822 standing out in the backdrop, searching the Galaxy map helped identify it and I thought, "I'm going to check that out!".

I have been heading in the general direction for a week or so and I am now only 294 LY away but struggling to make the final jumps to get there, which is real pain.

Currently flying a ASP with a 25 LY jump range. I don't necessarily need help at the moment, just needed to vent a little, although it is quite fun trying to find a way through.

I will get there....I just hope the trip home is easier...

Finally, fed up of seeing RAMONE....this CMDR has been to every system I visit.

the love/hate with people who have gone before is strange. at least you'll be sure to know if you got closer

25ly tho? what did you do to it?

Nothing special I think, just double checked the galaxy map and range is actually 22.68LY (24.51LY). FSD B5
was taking the 25 from rough guessing.

Do not give up, NGC 7822 is awesome, it holds many treasures within it!

Reaching it with 25ly is tricky, you might need to go around some weird paths and approach from the east/up side... Or you might actually save time by going back and upgrading the FSD and returning.

Whenever someone tells you that "jump range is not important for exploration", do not listen to it. It's bull. Always have a >30ly ship or you will suffer (or will have to grind materials which == suffer).

I got to NGC 7822 in a Cobra Mk III with a similar (25Ly) jump range. It can be done but there was a gap there where I had to reroute in order to find an area dense enough to allow me to make it. Well worth the trip.

Right now I'm exploring in a Fer de Lance. I wanted to set the Buckyball Sag A* record for the FDL, and now I'm cruising on the way home. Jump range isn't quite as important if you are exploring coreward, it is important as you get out towards the rim.

True, towards the core the star density will increase exponentially, regarding you don't go too "up" or "down".

But the shorter the jump range, the more close doors you will find. And you don't have to go to the fringes of the galaxy to bump on closed doors, there's loads of very interesting (and real) areas where its impossible to reach on a ship with less than 25ly, and very hard with less than 30ly. I once nearly failed on my mission to visit Mu Cephei, one of the biggest stars in the galaxy (both in ED and real) because after navigating a very sparse area to find a crossable path into it, the final jump was 35ly! I had to jump back and forth to burn enough fuel so my ship could finally make that 35ly jump. Mu Cephei is not a remote location in the fringes of the galaxy, is only 6k away from sol. NGC 7822 is one of the galaxie's wonders, its very near the bubble, getting there on less than 25ly is a challenge.

Me again, Thanks for the comments!

After a couple of nights trying to find a way through with no luck, I have decided to head home [mad].
I am going to upgrade my ship and then try again.

I think at least a 30ly jump drive is needed to make it trouble free...now to find my way back without getting killed!

Sorry to resurrect a month old thread, but it's relevant as I am in the same boat. I've been exploring the nebulae around this area (Veil, North America, Elephant's Trunk and Cave to name a few). You see NGC 7822 quite a long way off (just outside the bubble as a kind of smudge) as I started towards the Veil. Eventually I figured out what it was and added it to my list of must visits. It's very tempting once you can resolve the stars.

I didn't know it was tricky to reach, and I'm currently in an ASP Scout with just over 25Ly range, picking my way towards it at about 260 Ly distant.

It's fun, as I've never had to be picky about route plotting before. Hopefully I can make it...they seem soooo close now. I'm planning on running my fuel down to maximise distance where necessary.

I feel a call to the Fuel Rats coming on as I've never attempted this level of navigational micromanagement before. If I have to go back, it'll be with my tail between my legs, that's for sure.

i think you can get up there with 25ly - if you look on galmap there's a kinda 'tuft' of stars that reach up to it from the back. get underneath and climb up there

Did it with a similar jump range, it's possible, but you'll have to look around a bit. IIRC there's a path from below bottom right (if you look from Sol) somewhere.

Otherwise, just load up on some Jumponium.

This. Or engineer yourself a boosted FSD, you can squeeze +45% range out of the best mod with the best roll. Even a mid ranged average roll should get you about 20-25% to allow you to break that 30Ly mark :D

Well, I tried. I'm sure there's a path but I couldn't find it. I've been out for about a month in that cluster of nebulas, and I was planning on heading to the Soul nebula after that. I've turned tail and am heading back home. I'm going to have a look at the new features when I get back to the bubble, then grab my DBE which has a higher jump range...should have used that in the first place really, but the ASP Scout was my new ship and I wanted to play.

More fool me!

Should have a good few million in first discoveries though. :)

If you hand that in at an engineer's base it'll rank you up with them very quickly so you can get the good upgrades :D

Farseer here I come!

I'll kit the ship out with some weapons and defensive gear before I go see her though. Don't want to get ganked by anyone, player or NPC, without having the ability to fight back/escape.
