Newcomer / Intro Nice diversion from my FSX flight sim'ing

Laser me impressed.

I see lots of grind and other complaints by vets; meh, to me I'm taking it slow and enjoying the imaginative discovery journey. Learning all the different things to see, use and do, is amazing varied in this game.

I only have 3 complaints so far in my first week.

  • The constant updates, while appreciated, are confusing and a pain to keep up with.
  • Info for all these changing updates is not current (example, show me full info simply listing what ALL the icons, symbols and numbers mean within the whole game).
  • The procedures to initialize, start up and get the ships to fly are very minimal; think wish it was more FSX study plane like.

Hello, bumpy.

The frequency of the updates used to be much worse at the beginning. Now it kind of settled on one per week or two, which are mostly fixes - new stuff is added in big updates once in a couple of months, But I agree, the only way to keep up with new features and functionality is to read through the patch notes. Manual is only updated once a year, or so.
But as I see it, going blind into everything and discover it for yourself, like you do with the galaxy itself is also part of the charm. :)

And yes, being a long-time sim user myself, I'd also appreciate if the actual act of flying and operating the ship was more involved and differed from ship to ship.
One can dream, ey.
Though to be honest, unlike the "hardcore sims", Elite is more about WHAT you do, not HOW. You'll learn to live with it.

And lastly yes, I believe that the slow, explorative approach is the right one. Being a sandbox, this game doesn't push player anywhere. For a sim user, or the right type of explorer (in more than one sense of the word) it is an amazing and never ending experience.
Regretfully there are other people who need SOME measurable sense of accomplishment and basically the only measure of success in Elite is rank and money. So they grind, forgetting to actually play and enjoy the process. These are those who then flood the Dangerous Discussion with complaints about how shallow and boring the game is.
Fortunately, we are different - People who flew 777 from New York to Paris, then grabbed a Cessna and flew back via UK, Iceland, Greenland and Canada. And enjoyed every moment of it.
