General / Off-Topic Nintendo Switch

Issues:
  • Price? An extra screen strapped to the console can't do well for the pricetag, same with an extra battery to power it.
  • Battery Life? If it runs out quick, there is no reason for it to be mobile.
  • Weight? An entire console is inside there, would it hurt to hold and play?
  • What happens if you drop it? Can you get the screen repaired? Will it shatter like an IPhone if you drop it a foot?
  • Games? 3D Party support is key. Will there be indie support? How difficult is it to develop for? Is there Vulkan support?
  • Comfort? Small controllers are featured. Are the buttons convenient?
  • Horsepower? CPU? Is there a dedicated GPU? RAM?

Any of these issues could hurt the console, some more than others. In my opinion, mobility isn't a gimmick, it could be very useful. Phones and IPads aren't powerful enough to play games, and since a gaming laptop is expensive, lot of individuals and kids couldn't purchase one, plus, it's single player unless you bring a controller with you.

We know they're going back to cartridges, so space and storage shouldn't be an issue. Aside from that, we just have the reveal trailer, that, like all other Nintendo products, is marketed edgy and hipster, because that's what Nintendo thinks is the best marketing for a western audience. Yes, I'm bringing this thing to rooftop parties, and at airports I'm going to find an attractive female who has one too. It's like they know me too well, I'm gonna go buy one now. [hotas]

I barely find myself at home nowadays. I have a bunch of new games that I haven't even touched because I'm barely home at all. this is the perfect console for me so I'm definitely going to buy it, especially if they go on their word this time that there will be third party support instead of the whole Wii U debacle.

As I've said to friends, theres no reason those games shown couldn't be developed for the Wii U, I want an upgrade visually from Nintendo and I don't think the "Switch" is an upgrade atall? I mean, is the price going to be worth it just so I can take it outside?

However, I do like the idea of going out and meeting with friends, and then playing with them, but we'd probably need the stand to connect it to a TV~

Hmm yes it is worth. Because who tells that the visual part defines if it's worth or not? An it won't be more expensive than Sony or Microsoft. And when I go sometimes to my parents or anywhere else I need something to past the time.

Primary I don't want to use it to meet with friends and play or to connect it at a tv.

For me as well I'm not interested, as the games I'm interested are more games like PC or Anno or CitiesSkylines, and those games won't on Nintendo switch.

Of course it will be expensive, The Wii U was £300 at launch, and this will probably cost around £350+.

I know its not about the graphics, but when Microsoft and SONY show off their next console in (2019?) then the Nintendo Switch's graphics are going to be outdated by 13 tears, I don't think its worth paying for a system just for travel, like I said, theres no reason the Wii U couldn't run the few games they decided to show off.

Why would you buy an Xbox or a PlayStation? Just get a gaming PC for like $350-400, more (better) games, no $50-$100 online subscription fee, etc. With Nintendo Switch, it's got a feature that has always sold well for Nintendo: Mobility. [up]

Don't think I'd buy one, but it's a step in the right direction for Consoles, that will be dead and outdated pretty soon. [yum]

Nope, I need my Crash HD remaster, Uncharted and some other games D:

I've always disliked the whole having to pay for online thing, its why I didn't touch the xbox 360 thats sitting ontop of my shelves :V
I'll probably end up buying Switch anyway just for games, especially if they add in trophies, I don't know why but... achievements / trophies on PC don't really make me want to get the achievements or whatever.

There are a lot of exclusives that people would like though on consoles, yeah they get outdated quickly but both Microsoft and Sony are pushing hard for that not be the case with this gen with stuff like Project Scorpio and PS4 Pro.

Also a gaming PC to get the same quality in the UK (thanks to the exchange rates) would mean I could actually afford both consoles for the price of a low end PC now which is a shame as I used to build PC's for friends instead of them getting consoles but it just isn't viable now.

In regards to the Switch, there is info that it is running off Nvidia hardware with Tegra CPU and GPU custom chip with Pascal architecture. It has a custom API (NVN) from Nvidia with it's own physics engine, libraries and similar so no it is not DX12 or Vulkan but Nvidia/Nintendo own system.

It has had Bethesda, EA, Ubisoft, From Software, Warner Bros, Epic Games, Square Enix, TakeTwo and more sign up to support so we shall see what that brings on the gaming front.

There is a lot still unknown but I would not write this one off as quickly as some are at the moment.

Actually... If you build it yourself you can make a pretty cheap Game rig... You just gotta know where to buy the parts... How to put it together... Etc
If you buy one pre-made, sure it'll cost you an arm & leg... My current rig I built myself, and it cost under $400 only because I knew what I was doing

Yeah but what are you calling a gaming PC? $400 wouldn't get you a GTX 1060 GPU which is minimum needed for gaming at 1080p 60fps. Building a rig yourself in the UK would cost you the same as buying both consoles and a bit of cash left over for a few games. You need to consider you have to buy windows as well.

I'm not in the UK, there are a lot of places here in the US where you can get computer parts for a lot less then "over the counter" also non-name-brand parts so you don't have to fork over your life savings just to have the latest & greatest.

I upgrade as I need to, that was one way to save a few dollars when I first bought my parts for my current machine, yes, it doesn't have what I started with, but I still saved more doing it myself then buying something pre-made from a store or whatever have you.

Aye that is fair enough but what non brand stuff are you placing in your PC? I can think of the case maybe but most other things are branded if not all of them.

The cost of w10 is $110, a GTX 1060 is $249 so you are already at a cost higher than a console? The Xbox One S 1TB is $349 with either Gears of War 4 or Battlefield 1.

Our point is that it isn't as cheap anymore to get a PC gaming machine as it used to be. Go back a few years ago and yeah OK then but it is just not the case now.

Also I custom build all my PC's and have done for many people also. This really is not a cost comparative market anymore. I would suggest that a PC to provide games at 1080p/30fps/medium settings if you want to directly compare what you get out a console is around $500 to get anything more you suddenly jump another $600 to get say the GTX1060/AMD 480 which means you could get both the Xbox One and PS4 for the same price.

In the UK it is a lot worse even where you are looking at around 20% more in costs over that which means you could have paid for two years online and 2 games for the same as getting the PC up and running. I really do not think there is an argument to not buy a console "because it's cheaper to build a PC".

Actually an RX480 you can pick up for $200 (cheaper if you look in the right places) that's VR ready and runs 1080p 60fps, true it isn't amazing at 4k. You can also pick up an i5 processor for $150. $400 is a stretch but honestly if you really catch deals and know what you are doing and/or have pc parts lying around it is possible.

Now its not a monster machine granted but it does put it above all consoles available right now. Saying that for me I have an Xbox One, I like Xbox play anywhere when my Wife wants to watch her stuff I go on the pc in the other room. My gaming PC is a companion to my console, my console is the entertainment hub it is on 6-8 hours a day. For me the biggest thing my console and PC are missing is portability, I really like the idea behind switch, I would love to play Skyrim in 1080p at 60fps while out and about.

I am keeping my eye on this one, battery life, screen resolution, and gpu/cpu prowess is the thing I'm looking forward to hearing.

I wish I could get a windows 10 gaming tablet like switch where my saves all transfer between my pc and xbox.

Oh I get that you can but to suggest it's cheaper is still not true.

Yep the 4GB version of the card is $180
i5 processor - cheapest I have seen is $160
W10 - $110
PSU (Branded) because going non-branded is asking for trouble - $50
Hard drive $40 for 500GB
RAM $40 for 8GB

So far we are at $580

plus

-case $20
-mouse & keyboard (needed to log in even if not used for gaming) $10
- gamepad xbox one $40
- disc drive (Blu-Ray) $40

So now we are $690 for a gaming PC that punches above the xbox one/ps4 but at almost double the cost? Some people don't have the extra cash so to keep suggesting/stating "why get this when you can just get a pc" isn't helpful.

On topic more:

Nintendo have stated that games shown such Skyrim isn't actually coming to it and is just marketing to show what may be possible if a developer decided too. The only known game is Zelda.
