No Audio with Rift CV1 (not problem source selection)

Hello,

First time poster long time lurker. I have looked for a solution to this problem and I have yet to find an answer past the first tier "try changing your sound source" resolution. I have been following this game for a while, but I purposly stayed away until the rift was released. I bought an X52 HOTAS, it is working perfectly, I have video through the headset, but no audio.

So close, but so far away.

Here goes.

- I have the game installed through oculus home.
- I launched through oculus home I have HMD with headphones selected.
- My PC is set to headphones (rift) - Although nothing comes through when I try it through speakers.
- I can hear sound through the rift in OHome and other games.
- When I launch ED I hear the first 5 second of sound when the frontier splash screen shows and then a noticeable cut off in sound and then no sound after that.

- Tried setting HMB with headphones and then setting headphones (rift) in control panel.
- Tried setting HMB with speakers and then setting headphones in control panel.
- Tried setting HMB with speakers and then setting headphones (rift) in control panel.
- Tried setting HMB with headphones and then setting headphones in control panel.

No sound through speakers and no sound though headphones. After the first 5 seconds of ED.

Thank you for your help!

Are you using the USB3.0 on the RIFT? Just asking, I don't know if the audio is passing through USB or HDMI.
Do you have a third party audio Manager?
On the Windows speaker icon are all the sliders to maximum?
Have you tried other games/Experiences?
While in game if you use other headphone, do you hear the sound?

Was going to say 'install through Oculus home' but you covered that :)

When i launched my original instal had no sound, downloaded new version through Oculus home then all was fine.

Sound has always been a pain on my PC since Windows 10, it gets confused a lot between Optical / HDMI / headphones / Surround sound.

Maybe uninstall all ED versions, then restart and download a fresh version? Thats my professional opinion, i am in IT too :)

Thanks for the reply!

- Yes, and it does use the USB 3.0

Do you have a third party audio Manager?
- Come to think of it, I do (realtek HD audio manager) I will see what is going on there.

On the Windows speaker icon are all the sliders to maximum?
- Yes, and I can see audio bouncing off of the RIFT (device) and Elite Dangerous (applications)

Have you tried other games/Experiences?
- Yes, all normal (steam) games work perfectly through the speakers and all oculus home games (exceptED) work perfectly through the rift headset.

While in game if you use other headphone, do you hear the sound?
- I am ashamed to admit that I do not have any other headphones. My turtle beaches are used for XBOX ONE and I have a pretty decent sound system on my PC.

HOWEVER, now all of a sudden, when I set ED to use HMD with headphones and set my PC source as speakers I get sound through the speakers from the moment I launch the app until I close the app. If I change my source to rift and launch I get sound for the first 5 seconds (during the frontier splash) and then it cuts (literally cuts out to silence) and then no sound at all in the menus, missions, nothing.

Thanks again.

I have similar audio problems and I also have the RealTek HD audio manager. I'm not sure if there is a way to uninstall that but I think it's worth a shot for both of us :)

I JUST pulled it off.

It did not solve the problem, but I have a new symptom. This time is had CNBC playing on a web browser, changed windows sound source to rift, launched oculus home. Heard home and TV through rift, launched ED, heard splash audio, then sound cut. When it did I lost ALL sound, including the TV stream. I went down to sound mixer and could see audio bouncing in explorer, elite dangerous and rift headset, but none of it making it through to the rift. When I changed back to 'speakers' ED and CNBC came through the speakers perfectly.

Removing RealTek didn't seem to solve my problem either. Next chance I get I'm going to try making the Rift the default audio device in windows and then in the Rift options of Oculus Home I'm going to select Windows Audio as the default and see what happens. Frustrating. Really prevents any kind of immersion if you can't have sound.

I'm playing the Steam version and couldn't get sound in my CV1 at first, until I did the audio mixer - listen workaround. Not exactly the same problem as yours but maybe it could work. There are some youtube videos like this one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LV46UXLsVW4 that shows you how to play audio to 2 outputs in windows. The only difference I did was select "Headphones (Rift audio)" instead of what they did.

Just gave this a try, same result. It has been less of an issue because I can get sound through the speakers. But still. It sucks.

Here's something else to try, a free (donationware) program called Voicemeeter. I'm using that now and I have it set so that all Windows 10 audio goes to both my speakers and the Rift headphones. I switched from my earlier mixer/listen workaround because it was producing an echo in Virtual Desktop.

The program is pretty simple to use. I just set #1 hardware input to Stereo mix (realtek high def audio). And select the two hardware outs -- A1 to MSVAD wave, and A2 to WDM: Headphones (Rift Audio). I can use the Steam version of E : D, and there is no echo in Virtual Desktop.

Hello hello! My first post, but I felt inspired because I finally figured it out. I was having the exact same problem, same Realtek drivers, etc. My solution isn't perfect, but it'll get you the audio you're trying to get in your rift headphones. I do hope this helps, but apologize in advance that it's not "perfect."

1) Open your playback devices, set your rift headset as the default device.
2) Right click on your Rift audio device, and select Properties
3) Select the tab that reads Advanced, and change the drop down to CD Quality. (I believe the default is DVD quality.)
4) Open your Oculus Software. Select the settings Icon in the upper right. (Looks like a gear.)
5) Select Devices on the left, then select the headset. In the "VR Audio Output" change it from Rift Headset to "Windows Default."
6) Launch your game.

Hopefully this works for you. Just as a side note, I only recently figured this all out and one thing I noticed as I type this out is when I exit the game (Skyrim, in my case) windows resets the default speakers from Rift to Regular Speakers, so it seems you might need to set the default headphones as the rift every time you want to launch a game. I hope this fixes your problem. Please let me know! Good luck everybody.

Rep to you good sir! I spent entirely too long wrangling around in this exact same scenario of 'only Elite refuses to play audio through the Rift - launched from the Oculus home or not'

It was driving me absolutely nuts, this workaround worked!

Glad to hear it!

Having to do this my self as the windows default audio. Only in Elite and darn annoying. No options in Audio to select source.

Lupo316 is correct. I actually found this myself at the weekend whilst removing the headphones (they are good quality but I prefer speakers for a sit down experience), and realised the sound device much be selectable somwhere in Oculus Home as it was still showing up in Windows. For anyone who doesn't know, those headphones are easy to remove and refit by using the screw on the inside of the headband.

As stated above this post, ED doesn't let you choose the sound device to output to and uses the Windows default device.
