Weird. You could try from the Sound Options to mute the sound and save and then turn the sound back on to see if it resets something.

The only other thing I could think of is if the sound was going through an HDMI cable and the Nvidia sound driver was somehow nerfed for ED, maybe in the Nvidia optimised game settings, but that's a lot of ifs.

See this thread for fix: No sound at all.
I had exactly the same problem, and after swapping e-mails with FD support, this fixed it for me:

If you extract this zip file and run the contained dxsetup.exe, let the installer complete then run Elite Dangerous again you should now have audio.
You have to extract the files, 6 of them, to a desktop folder and run the .exe file from there. All files must be in the same folder.
