No famine systems...what gives?

Just back in after a few years. Trying to engineer FSD and need to pick up some Wakes. No famine systems on the map and 2/3 of the listed in INARA need permits and the third is not in a famine state. Alternatives to getting into a decent amount of wakes?

Time to plug my usual thread: https://forums.frontier.co.uk/threads/time-to-buff-antagonistic-pve.472325/

tl;dr Causing negative states such as Famine + Lockdown is incredibly difficult and unrewarding, and must compete against the much-easier-caused positive states. Needs dire correction.

Soon. That fertilizer, the Rockforth stuffs, that's thargoid. Once they hatch, people will be starvin' all over the place.
If FD tried to correct the lack of states like Famine and Lockdown with a temporary event to cause them, I'd be bitterly disappointed.

What's wrong with you? You find out that Rockforth Fertilizer is thargoid, that will soon be spread across the galaxy, and you're "bitterly disappointed"? Just how did humanity reach the stars?

...another fix to add to the list... or actually it’s probably already there. If BGS wasn’t a good enough reason to fix it, then Engineering... but then this opens the whole HGE spawn state can of worms across a variety of G5 manufactured mats. Sorry, OP. We’ve been there and the solution that most of us have settled with is Jameson’s Crash, and trade. Or HGE for Imperial Shielding and trade. Would like to gripe, but I wouldn’t be the first, won’t be the last, and FDev are patching bigger issues at the moment.

I'm assuming you don't understand how the BGS works... so...

FD could remove all food in the universe from the game, and it would not cause a famine state. Famine is the result of the extreme lower end of the economy slider. Decreases in the economic slider are caused by:
  • Selling goods for a loss
  • Selling on the black market; and
  • Certain missions
Per this chart, trading Food's only positive effects are increasing economy and influence, which is consistent for all traded goods.

The short version of this is, it doesn't matter if there's no food in the galaxy. Trading Medicines, Weapons, Minerals, these all cause increases to the economic slider of a faction, and therefore prevent famine. There's no downwards push or anything like that if food is not traded.

I've got no problem with this story arc; it's interesting and the effects are fun to watch. And if it caused localised clutches of famine, yeah, fun, cute.

But if this story arc is entirely the result of FD going "Huh, Famine's all but dried up across the galaxy, we'd better spin up a story to manually inject some famine states!" then they've got their heads screwed on wrong, and they must fix the imbalances against these states in the current BGS if they want to see Famine ever occurring naturally like it's meant to.

BGS? Famine states? Are you some kind of deep state operative trying to distract the people from the threat before them? Do you even care that soon you'll be ingesting thargoid dna? I am one Commander who doesn't want to go all 'goid. This is a defining moment for humanity, and you're riffin' on about the stock market. We are doomed.

I find the Galmap doesn't really help that much with info about systems. Seems like some features don't work when you use filters to sift through systems.
I just use a wake scan outside high pop starports using a wake scan equipped sidey.

I need to get off these drugs XD

Back in the 3.3 beta I found an installation that had enough traffic to make it worth trying to scan wakes. I put up a thread about it, which attracted no attention whatsoever, and I didn't pursue it because I'm quite happy just raiding the Jameson Cobra, which in terms of time is much more productive. Still, if you're agin relogging at the Jameson Cobra, it might be worth checking out:

Just a follow up to this post, and thanks for all your suggestions. I managed to scan lots of npc wakes outside Jameson's in SOLO mode. In case that hasn't opened up to you yet, perhaps any of the main superpower systems.
