No free ship?

Hi, I tried out Elite Dangerous way back and of course you got a ship to start with - now, I just tried Odyssey from scratch (while it was up...) I did the tutorial and ended up at some station walking around getting missions - now I just wanted to check...

I am meant to do missions and buy a ship? I do not get a free one? Thank you.

edit: It just seemed a bit odd to have to get a 'taxi' to assassinate someone.

David Braben always said he wanted the game to be playable without a ship.... even going back pre kickstarter.
I think it shoul;d be an optional start though...

I like the idea and when I get odyssey for my second account I'll be clearing the save and making a shipless character... don't want to do that with my main though.

I mean they give you enough cash to buy the ship, seriously, what's the big deal?

It's a choice, you could start new game in Horizons and get your freewinder...

I suppose the answer is to start the new game with the base ED game and then launch it in Odyssey once you have a ship.

or just walk you butt 3 feet to the ship dealer and buy one with the credits they give you.

Not sure why. If you buy Odyssey you are literally doing so for the on foot element. Getting a sidewinder isn't costly. In fact, it's cheaper than most equipment on foot

Have you not seen any content? Is this a serious question? They can get transport to do on foot missions at settlements.

In the same way that you can play Horizons without fitting weapons to your ship - it excludes some options, but you can do it if you want.

I don't think many people will.

well, the first phase of Alpha for Odyssey no one had ships and you couldn't buy them, we still had fun. It's very possible to play odyssey without a ship
