Greetings,

For the last few days I've been playing "No Man's Sky". It was released in August 2016 too early with some bugs and lacking what they promised. By December they got their act together adding in a lot of what was missing and is stable. Still it doesn't come close to the depth of ED. The graphics are circa 2007 and they are using old school techniques having to Alt-Tab to stop the game to look for some answers via Google on monitor 2. But my version is just a copy of the Steam version so there are graphic issues with the Steam files still embedded in the setup. Maybe I'll work on them later.

I bought the offline single player version not connecting to the Internet. That means that I have total access to all the files. So I played it straight up to about 60k credits then hacked them to 1.4 billion. Now I have a freighter/base and the second best ship in the game but credits can only take you so far. One still has to work out the puzzles to move in the game but I didn't have to grind away for months to get there. That is probably why many grind away only to find out the game is lacking.

NMS is using old graphic technology and Windows connections. But they nailed several issues that they got right was allowing a player to establish a base on a planet or a freighter/base which moves with you as one advances in the game. One can land on any planet or moon with or without an atmosphere and can see animal life forms and many other trees and plants moving around you. One can research the critters and get paid for doing it. Add in the weather effects and the rotation of planets from day to night with temperature issues and they did their homework.

Once you figure out the game many will not like it for the grind they had to get there. All the interactions with the AIs are the same from novice to expert. NMS will never be close to ED. But they are already ahead with amazing planets full of life and texture. If your goal is exploring then ED could learn a few lessons from the older technology from NMS. Sometimes less is more.

Regards
