No offline- if I start playing late, will I just get torn apart by pirates à la DayZ?

I pre-ordered earlier this month- now I'm rather in two minds about the whole thing.

On the one hand, I don't really mind that you need an internet connection to play (despite this being an explicit promise in the Kickstarter, arguably DRM, etc etc).

On the other hand, I don't particularly relish the idea of getting out of the first system and simply being torn apart by pirates who have been playing the game for far too long and have all the best equipment. I don't want to get squeezed out of the game simply because I have a job, social life etc.

I can't seem to find anywhere on the site that details what the multiplayer interactions are going to be, other than fighting and (possibly) trading. Where can I look this stuff up?

Thanks

First of all: Solo mode is still there. You can play without any human opponents any time you want to.

I think you're more likely to be intercepted by NPC pirates in any case. And whether or not you're intercepted will depend on your flying skill. Since you're not going to lose a lot with the standard sidewinder, you will have plenty of opportunity to hone your skills.

I'd stay to the safer systems though in the beginning. And that irrespectively of whether you play online or solo.

You can always play the "Solo" option until you feel ready to start multi-player. You can upgrade your ship and hone your combat skills against NPCs in Solo, and carry this stuff across to multiplayer.

You will be able to play online SOLO, so won't have to deal with other players. However, everything else will be shared between both groups such as market trends, discoveries (first to discover gets a potential huge payout compared with those discovering later down the line) etc etc.

Essentially, you won't have to worry about players with names like xx_l33tzn0sc0pek1lla_xx griefing you at all!

You can play the game in solo online, this allows you to play in the same world with out the fear of interacting with other players. You can then jump into Open when ever you want, or feel ready. That being said, I only play in Open and no it is nothing like Dayz. That are real penalties for attacking other players, and there are supposed to be co-op missions at some point. You also gain very little by attacking another.

There's a PvE group with over 800 members - you could play among other players without the concern that players will simply target you because you are human.

Solo Online. You don't ever have to directly see another live player ever if you don't want to. There'll also be a Group mode, for you and your besties, or Open, which is all the everybodys.

Personally I can't see the game needing Solo as a refuge from the wasteland that Open seems to get repped for, but it's there even if the benefit ends up being purely psychological.

Edit: Post filled with shuriken. Wow forums :D

My concern is the number of times we'll need to explain the distinction between SOLO and OFFLINE over the next 6 months.
The concept of a solo online game is unusual, and multiplayer is synonymous with online in people's heads.

Don't worry about it OP - It's Braben's fault for inventing something new again. I blame him. :)

Online mode isn't really as bad as you think. Those who may be deemed as 'pirates' hang around anarchy systems and so too do bounty hunters.

Shok.

Fear not! Online solo will get you out of all harms way :)

Even open is fairly safe, dont go to anarchies things can get rightfully rough there , as it should.
Jump the wagon, it's a great game , with potential to be even greater , honestly

Cheers Cmdr's

...like DayZ... wait a second, there's Space Zombies?! No wonder I'm always able to respawn into the game, we're all the undead! On a serious note, it would be fun, in future mods, to be able to crash land on a zombie apocalypse planet and fight in DayZ fashion on the surface while looking for supplies to repair your ship.

ZOMG, ZOMBIES... please...no more zombies.

I don't think ED will turn in to a version of EVE online where advanced players do nothing BUT face roll newer players and lower equipped commanders etc

I hope not anyways...

How could it? You can always jump into Solo online or Private group online and never have to worry about them. Or heck just move to another system.

Some systems have more security than others, and piracy there is next to zero. And then there are escort ships planned which hopefully will be there in the final game. This isn't DayZ, there's an actual world around you that lives and breathes, use that to your advantage, and players should be the least of your worries.

Also, this isn't so much of a game with "gear progression", small ships remain effective against large ones, if only for their ability to escape, and then player skill plays a huge part, much more than in a FPS.

So you shouldn't worry about that, really.

Fair enough then, I'll hang on to that pre-order. So, where can I read more about the finer detail of the game- penalties for attacking other players, discovery bonuses, etc? The guide on the website is a little thin

People are taking this offline thing way too seriously. Yes if you have no internet connection then it is worth complaining. Most of us these days have some sort of internet so playing solo is there for people that want it. You will probhably be able to play solo on a mobile phone connection it really dose'nt have to be super fast.

Unless they have a bounty! Omnomnomnom....
