Newcomer / Intro No shields on an explorer?

I've done over 1M Ly shieldless. Never crashed my shieldless ship. Did a few 4G+ landings with 0-3 % of hull loss.

I definitely prefer repair limpets to shields.

That's stretching it a bit. Do you think it's helping OP? I've never seen those things after 1.1 million LY of exploration, and the docking computer will get you into the station and onto the pad without bumping anything. Random debris in the station is not that common, and even if you do bump it, you lose a couple of percent of hull, which you can repair as soon as you land.
I never said they were particularly likely and as I wasn't thinking of taking a docking computer on an exploration ship it was the entrance slot and the pad and its surroundings I was considering a potential risk.
I suppose it comes down to the fact I wouldn't recommend a shieldless build for anything.

Don't waste your breath!

First exploration trip on the return got interdicted.
Shield saved my ship and 2 months worth of exploration data.
What you say is misleading at best.

Save your virtual breath! Shields have made practical sense for me on countless occasions within my even more countless exploration trips, so I always now equip them. Some people, however, feel that their opinion is simply Gospel, and should be taken at face value and accepted without reasoned argument by the rest of us. Their version of debate is simply to restate it in ever blunter terms until the rest of us see the light. At that point, I find the ignore button far more rewarding than continuing to bang my head against the brick wall of arrogance.

My exploration ships all have shields. Really cannot see the point in eaking-out a tiny increase in jump-range by not fitting one. Even if you never land on the surface, having the comfort of knowing the shield is there if you need it makes it worth-while.

After all the game is about enjoying your time in your ship, constantly striving for the ultimate in efficiency, jump range or whatever takes away from that for me.

The only reason to fly without Shields during Exploration : you're flying a record-breaker Ship and need those 0.2LY extra Jumprange.

Otherwise : always fly with Shields.
No reason not to have them and quite a few to have them.

PS.
I've never - not once - seen an Explorer regretting taking Shields... but alot (!) who regretted not having them or too weak ones and who paid the ultimate price.
Your call which group you'd wish to belong to.

Depends on how much hull your ship has, how well you're able to land without damaging your ship, and if you carry repair limpets or not.

I don't have shields or repair limpets on my DBX, but I can land it almost anywhere without damaging it, and it has 1600 hull.

Well, everyone has their own goals, preferences and enjoys different things.

I don't fly a record-breaker but I prefer exploring sparse areas. So every 0.1 Ly of jump range counts. And I don't really like engineers, have unlocked only four of them so far. And I don't like big ships, I fly DBX now, Phantom and AspX before. So I try to optimize loadout which means dumping useless modules.

Why I consider shields useless? Because, if you fly solo or in PG, they may be useful in one and one occasion only - planetary landings. Do they protect you against the most common explorer's mishaps: emergency drop from SC and faceplanting star/planet in SC? No. You'll damage your hull even if you have the biggest and the most engineered shields in the galaxy. But repair limpets will help you in all of those cases. Moreover, you can use them to help a fellow unlucky Cmdr who has useless shields but has just found himself with 30% hull 50 kylies from the nearest station.

That's why I carry limpets and tiny cargo rack instead of shields. :)

From the other hand: the discussion is going to be purely academical since we'll have Fleet Carriers in every other system soon. ;)
