Horizons No storage is costing me heaps...

G'day all,
I realise this has been griped about but the thought just crossed my mind as to how much carrying commodities around is costing me.
I do long range hauling in the Python, I keep two of each commodity as I am rewarded them for missions, and was surprised as to how much cargo space it takes up, at the last look, and despite ditching those I don't need at the moment I have 50 tons of space been occupied, that equates to 2.5 million cr's a day I am losing in valuable cargo space on long hauls....not to mention that on the case when an interdiction is successful against me, that I lose the lot and once again have to spend time when I again have to travel to purchase that commodity I need to do an upgrade..
Can't wait for storage to be introduces.

Only keep the ones that you can't buy and then only if you have a mod you're working for that will need them. Plan ahead. Once you get to level 5 with Engineer they only require commodities you can buy. Some mods only go up to 3 or 4 so if you want those hang on to what you need that can't be bought.

The game penalizes you by carrying Engineer materials over long periods of game play.

Storing items=interdiction bait.

I had the same frustration at first - I couldn't switch ships because I had too much cargo (commodities). What I did was take Bessie, ny tradeconda, to all the Engineers I had access to and burning through mats & commodities to raise my level while also modding Bessie up fine.

I found that the best thing to do is collect a set of commodities for upgrading one tweak via one Engineer, then fly back and forth with the fleet until everyone has got the lvl 5 mods. You can also take a ship with good cargo room, downgrade the internals to another ship's specs (ie clipper/python with lower-spec parts to feed an Asp or DBX). Despite many people saying it's possible (through rebuy old parts) to swap modules, I'm too chicken to do that.

Take a little time and make a shopping list, starting with one Engineer's tweaks, and gather the commodities needed for that one tweak, so you have 3-5 rolls. Remember, you don't have to apply the mod! Some mods take only carbon or iron at their lowest point. You can also burn some stuff to get you past a hump - say you can do lvl 1 mod, but can't find the stuff for lvl 2 and you know you can do lvl 3; just spam the lower level to get you past the blockage.

As GJ51 pointed out, don't try to hoard too much; you'll get stuck in your ship. Make notes about where you were getting X commodities for higher levels of mods and use them as a guide. Many commodities needed have in-game information about where to purchase them.

It all pays off at lvl 4 or 5: things get easier to find/gather. So work all your fleet on one or two upgrades to unlock other Engineers; that's not much to carry around (I finally squeezed 192 commodities down to 56 so I could get back in my Asp and mod her up.

Here's a bit of my own shopping list that might help -

COMMODITIES

Emergency Power Cells - Gladutjin/Chadwick, many
Energy Grid Assembly - 40 Ceti/Pailes, many
Exhaust Manifold - Kharputo/Somerville, many
Hardware Diagnostic Sensor - Xiripa/Kanwar, Bwgcolmasci/Hedin
Heatsink Interlink - LHS 3980/Gresley, many
Ion Distributor - Hip 18327/Stevens Orbital, many
Magnetic Emitter Coil - Haritana/Lorrah, Haeduwong/Bulleid, more
Power Convertor - Perun/Shukor, many
Power Transfer Bus - Wuthawchu/Haignere, many
Radiation Baffle - Taevaisa/Sopwith, more
Reinforced Mounting Plate - Findalibila/Grassmann, many

*Micro-Weave Cooling Hoses (no stations I've found)
*Modular Terminals (no stations)
*Nanobreakers (no stations)

The stuff in bold is what I really need. I'm holding on to the cooling hoses and terminals; don't really need the mod that takes nanobreakers so I just sell them. Everything on that list are the commodities needed for lvl 5 at 3 Engineers and lvls 3-4 on two others. It does get simpler now, esp that mods only require 1 of anything (before it was hellish). Mats aren't a problem unless you really overhoard.

Also, all the shinys look great, but I concentrate on the core upgrades: FSD, Thrusters, Shield Generator & Power Plant/Distributor. I will play around with armor, hull & guns later.

Costing me too... was upgrading my python after doing the conda and thought id wipe the dust off the mkiv cobra ... ooops only 8t cargo hold in the mk iv, cant use that :( so currently grinding empire rep to add a cutter to my collection ^_^ FD need to give us 500/1000t cargo space at our selected home port.

I actually think the system is designed to discourage you from keeping them. In any case, the best method is to gather everything else you need for an upgrade, and only then get the last commodity. Then take it to the Engineer right away. It's a little annoying, but less annoying than hoarding them and dealing with the pirates and loss of cargo space.

Thankyou all for your thoughts.
I will have to agree with just doing one upgrade at a time is best, despite the running back and forwards collecting commodities and travelling to have it commissioned that it will involve. Better to get one mod done than lose all the materials Ive collected.

Yes some of the materials certainly are far and few in between, well will just have to keep plodding on.

Once again thankyou all for taking the time to answer in some much detail.
