No thrust, slowly spinning alone next to a star - and being in awe of it all

At a Nav Beacon I made the risky choice of taking on a wing of 2. I was getting cocky at a whole 30% mostly harmless, but my Chieftan was wanted them... The wing was an Eagle and an Asp, one was competent the other novice. I went at the Asp, dropped their shields quickly, hammering away and doing a good job of staying on target- so far so good. The Eagle lined up behind me, I was getting hit but tried to tank it out while I finished the Asp. The cockpit warnings hit and I found I was without engines (didn't know that could happen), spinning slowly, with a off Eagle and Asp ready to have their way with me. The Feds moved in and took them down quickly - yes, then I watched them FSD off -no, leaving me alone next to the sun - and a slow spin that was cool but nauseating in VR.

Full fuel, 350ls from the station, power is on, cockpit is intact - no engine thrust. I had hoped the lateral thrusters would at least work to arrest my spin and then I could use them to "regular space" to the station (only about a year or so at that speed - but that would be something).

I start digging through options. I knew that ED had alot, as I had bumped into them as I looked for other things, but generally ignored them as I was favoring game play over learning until I needed too. Well, I needed too now!

Usually the Nav Beacon is not quiet for long, but it continued to just be me. I was digging through the menus, examining each option, watching the sun swing by over and over again in VR while I idly moved my joystick and throttle hoping for some magic result. It was an amazingly cool experience and just scary enough for me to be "in the moment", and that made me really want to find a way out. Do the Fuel Rats do repair..? Can I send a distress call and get a repair limpet drop? (I had collector limpets) - but I found the answer on my panel to the right. Most of you probably know what I found - Reboot and Repair. Never heard of it, could this be it! I hit reboot, got the warning about scavenging other modules to try to repair broken ones and my ship immediately went pitch black! Right at the moment my back was too the sun, so it dark as my HUD fully shut off and then the life support breathing sound kicked in - Im screwed I thought. Then the ship started to cycle and systems came back and a note that engines had been repaired!
Still, nothing moved, no thrust....should I reboot again...does one reboot impact another or build on each other, or do I risk breaking something else? Reboot again, Same message, "Engines Repaired" (or something to that effect)....now using the "lost alone in space" patience I had started to muster I dug through my modules again. Ah, in trying to restart my engines I had turned them off and on - but no, apparently, I didn’t turn them on again or the reboot turned them off during the repair. Cycle Engines On, I had thrust! - stopped my spin and headed to the station...wow.

I played my first video game sometime in the first half of the 70s - life long gamer here. It does not get better than ED in VR.

Ha ha! Similar thing happened to me some weeks ago (VR also!). Crashed hard into an asteroid while doing some bounty hunting on a RES site and started spinning like Darth Vader out of the Death Star. While I was preparing for the end I decided to look through the panels and lo and behold: the REBOOT button was there. I think I left the site with 2 or 3% hull and 2% module integrity on the engines. GG!

Good story. Have you had your canopy shot out, also a wow experience for me at least.

Yes, another thriller :). I didn't realize the HUD was projected onto the glass, so no glass, no HUD. I had the HUD on the side glass of the canopy so had to sort of try to fly sideways trying to get back to the station with my limited O2!

Seriously, same thing? I suppose many have faced this. It was an incredible surprise since unfortunately I am such a fan of studying game strat and watch a lot of youtube videos, but that has given away a lot. In this case I didn't know about this part of the ship at all. So it was a thrilling surprise.
Ha, yes, just like DV and the Death Star - exactly!
