No way to introduce a player to the game!!! IT'S BROKEN!!!

I just finished my training tutorial in Elite Dangerous and received my pilot's license and the tutor said there was a mission already waiting for me and he would be waiting at Mawson Dock when I finished my mission. THREE HUGE PROBLEMS!!!
ONE - There was no mission with a destination of Mawson Dock in the Dromi System, but rather a Courier mission for Dimery Prospect which I accepted and attempted to complete.
TWO - I arrived at Dimery Prospect and engaged the Auto Docking Computer and the damned AI landed my ship on top of another ship on docking bay #2. I cancelled the docking request and left the area and waited for the other ship to leave... ALMOST A FREAKING HOUR!!! I then submitted another docking request and engaged the Auto Docking Computer again and landed safely. I completed the Courier mission but had no other misions available because I was tagged with Anonymous Access Protocols because I had outstanding fines for "BLOCKING" Docking Bay #2.
THREE - There is no person of authority present at Dimery Prospect to whom any fines can be paid to clear the penalty protocol status and access missions; nor is there a PAY FINES tab in any port in the entire game!!! For such a highly interactive game, I find it tremendously shocking that there is no PAY FINES tab in the space ports!
Is it me or just a coincidence that I gave my Sidewinder the ship name of Bloody Hell?

You can pay fines at most stations in the Contacts tab.
Or look for stations with an Interstellar Factor to safely pay all fines and bounties.

There are a number of ways to interpret that if the text is accurate, but to me it clearly doesn't say there was a mission to Mawson Dock, it says there is a mission waiting for you and after you complete the mission your tutor will be waiting for you at Mawson Dock. So you do the mission, whatever it is, then go to Mawson Dock to meet your Tutor. So once you finish the courier mission to Dimery Prospect you then fly on to Mawson Dock, seems pretty straightforward to me.

Unfortunately OP, much of that was of your own doing.

Read, or in this case listen to the information given. Switch modes at busy outposts (don't wait an hour, players can sit on the Dock as long as they want). Learn that not every station has everything.

Training missions are quite good too, if you really are struggling in the paddling pool.

One- if you checked the transaction tab you probably already had the mission to Mawson.
Two-yeah, npcs sometimes do that in open. Which sucks. Should have gone to Mawson ;) or relog to solo and remember for later (especially at engineer bases).
Three-did you check under contacts, the first option (authority?) usually lets you pay fines. Not always though - sometimes you might need to find an interstellar factor - see the pilots handbook in-game.

Lots to learn, and yes there are bugs - should have seen it before they improved it recently ;)

Just bear in mind guys, the game forces you into open as a new commander and doesn't even introduce the concept of other modes to you. You wouldn't even know private groups or solo exist unless you'd found it out elsewhere or you'd logged out, much less that it's the defacto method for docking at outposts...

Well, unless of course you read the manual (hey, but who these days avails themselves to information provided?).... or on second login happen to notice the other modes displayed, or read the loading screen tips (I assume there is a loading screen tip about this).

You are nor wrong SMK, it is a poor introduction
But that's computers for you. That and PRNGs. You do get strange odds turning up.
The old-timers are used to it and know when to pay attention. E.g. Accidentally shooting a green square or a target that hasn't been properly scanned in combat. <Big hint> And what to read and check in missions.
Rule No. 1 is: don't fly without insurance or you will end up back in a sidewinder if you can't afford the rebuy, when you die. And die we all do. :)

There's no loading screen tip and even if there was, how would a new player read it if they've not logged out yet?

It might be in the manual. I'd suggest expecting new players to read through that behemoth to avail themselves specifically to this "trick" is expecting quite a lot.

I'm just pointing out that the new player experience doesn't directly teach you everything (nor could it possibly) and I'm pretty sure most of us might have had at least a few things happen that weren't explained intuitively by the game (and many of us will work it out ourselves and other things we'll need to read about here or elsewhere). It's not to say angry posts about it are the answer but sometimes it's fair to acknowledge obfuscation is common in Elite and it's easy for experienced players to forget that given we've had over 6 years to build up the database in our heads of "how to work around everything".

It's cool though. If you'd rather blame the OP that's a freedom you're entitled to :)

I don't think people are criticizing but have forgotten how to speak to strangers. Those of us on the forums are used to each other and take short cuts.

Hi Cmdr, a handy tip for the future; if a ship is already on the pad, instead of waiting for the other ship to leave in it's own good time you can just repeat the docking request a couple of times and it will either give you another landing pad or if it's an NPC it will trigger them to launch and leave.

Good luck (y)

I wasn't blaming OP, just saying that FD do provide info about other modes. Sure, not on first login, after the intro, where you are thrown into open. But on next login, you see the options presented and it might cause someone to pause for a moment and think "What's this?"

But, you know, people...

I mean, when i get a new game, before i even start playing, i read the manual if provided or go look for information about how the game works. Hell, usually before even buying the game.

The mission to Mawson Dock is already in your transactions during the tutorial.
“A contract has been assigned to you...”

It sounds like you then opened the mission board and took an extra mission to D Prospect.

The rest sounds like a bug.

The OP was just pointing out to fdev that it's a bit rubbish to have autodock that gets you a fine and can't dock - after your first jump. Which is fair enough feedback. Presumably why they put it in 'suggestions'.

Would have been better in the issue tracker, but meh - they're new :)
Good point. They should make sure the starting ships don't have SCA or DC.

I don't know, when I started out I did the tutorial on how to dock, got in my sidewinder and thought, "let's see what's out there", then I died.

Then I did it again, this time after equipping a fuel scoop I found in outfitting, then I flew into a star and died"

Then I did it again and didn't die, but I did get lost.

Altogether I had a great time, and that was just the first day, now we get a starter zone, how....cute!

..............

ONE - The mission was already assigned to you, it was in your contacts panel.

TWO - Lots of people yesterday complaining of pads already occupied by NPCs - hard luck that you experienced this bug - you can switch modes (yes I know you are not offered a choice of modes on first launch) - learning experience. ;)

THREE - I didn't know that Dimery Prospect does not have CONTACTS you will have to pay your fine at another starport - Contacts - Authority Contact.

So, now you have had your first rant - go out and start to do stuff you enjoy in the game, you will come across lots that will annoy and infuriate you, sometimes even after so long I get exasperated at certain "foibles" I come across in the game - but on balance, it is the best thing since the last thing that was the best since sliced bread.
