Noise when ED in the background

Greetings,

I haven't found any issue like mine on Google, neither here on the official forums, so here I am.
Issue: Some noises occur when Elite: Dangerous is in the computer's background. We can do this with ALT+TAB to switch between the applications opened. If I put ED out of this background mode, the noises stop.

Do some of you have this issue as well?
Do you have a solution?

To test it, you need to:
  1. Launch ED, not in game specifically, the menu is ok.
  2. ALT TAB to the desktop, nothing else.
  3. Noises occur
  4. Switch back to the game, noises stop

Thanks for your time and help.

My noises don't stop when I tab back to the game, I'd be worried if they stopped when I tab out of the game as I wouldn't know if I was being jumped!

Same here... but since i have switched to the crappy Win 8.1 (long story) i have many minor but strange sound issues so i assumed its just one of them.

Your talking about this static sound right?

Yes, it goes "vzouiiiuiuiiiuiiiiiiiiiuiiiiiii", and I don't know which of my components are doing this sound.

  • Only for Elite: Dangerous
  • Only when I ALT+TAB to desktop while the game/menu is opened
  • It stops when I ALT+TAB or come back to the game again.

Oh this issue... If you play on a Mac you will need a large lump hammer to fix the problem. If not can you video it on a phone or something so it can be heard. Might be fan noise or is it more electronic sounding?

Sounds like a bearing on a fan could be cracked. When you alt tab your system recognises that the video card is no longer displaying a 3d app. Most modern cards will spin down their fans at this point which could result in the noise your hearing. The slow down is quick and any damage to a bearing would be heard.

When you alt tab back to the game the fan will spin up again but depending on the speed build up it may not be enough to trigger the noise.

If the machine is still under warranty I advise taking it back to be looked at.

Please note: I only think this is the case and I could be wrong but with 32 years working with PC's every day this is my best guess. Hope you get it sorted :)

Thank you for the help Bran Tse Mallory.

I have tried some other games and Alt-TAB-ed them like I did with ED: no sound noise.
The fans speed are quite the same. for each tests.

I've also noticed that the sound mainly come from the bottom of my case... maybe the internal fans of the Graphic card?
I have no FX, no Reshade, no additional stuff that the normal game.

Also, I can't bring it back for a test as it has been delivered to my house in Ireland, from France. That's quite a long distance.

Edit: I have done something stupid but it worked. I sticked my ear to a long carton-roll and listen to my components. It definitively comes from the left part of my graphic card. NVidia GeForce GTX 970.
