Non-Aquatic Animals swim WAAAAY too often...

...Seriously. These are zebra, buffalo, and a bunch of other hooved herbivores that I'm pretty sure don't just go take a swim for the fun of it, on a constant basis. This river is ALWAYS full of animals who have no business spending all their time swimming in it.

Could yall maybe turn down the swimming rate on animals who aren't meant to swim regularly??

Yeah, honestly- a lot of these animals should never swim unless absolutely necessary to get somewhere, and always prioritize taking land routes if available. Realistically a zebra doesn't want to swim. x'D
Not to mention the funky aquatic giraffe in the game. I couldn't even find videos of a giraffe swimming.

😂 This just reminded me of a really funny Zoo Tycoon 2 Parody Cover that I sadly can't find anymore. It had a Tank with a swimming Giraffe in it and 2 Nasoboem (don't know if there's a official English Name for it. It's a scientific Joke Animal that has a Nose that is evolved for Movement) in the Front.

And of course I absolutely agree that Gazelles, Zebras and Giraffes shouldn't swim all the Time. It doesn't need to get removed completely from the Game but it should really be a extremely rare Event for those Species. Maybe even completely removed for normal Animals that normally don't swim and add a Water loving Trait when we finally get Animal Personalitys (would be also nice if we couldn't release them or would at least get less Conservation Credits for them due to lower Survival Chances)

They walk across the lake, but it looks much more natural, like herds crossing swamps, than active swimming.
Great to read this. If I remember correctly someone mentioned some Time ago that a Bug made it impossible for Animals to walk through shallow Water. Maybe I can use this Knowledge to do some cool Enclosure Designs when I rebuild my Orangutan Breeding Center.
If they would also make Herds really move together, it would probably look really awesome

Orangutans don't enter any water in the game (or real life for that matter)

Really? I know that Gorillas sometimes use Branches to see how deep the Water is, so I assume it would be similar with Orangutans

Does that mean theoretically I could use 5cm deep Water in the Game to keep Orangutans in a Area? 😂
In the early days, animals that couldn't swim were able to wade in shallow water, shallow enough to roughly keep 50% of their height above the water, the depth limit being the transition to swimming animations that they didn't have (different for every individual animal and depending on the point in time, because of their size genes as well as growth throughout an animal's lifetime, even as an adult). Later, this was changed (probably in preparation for the Aquatic Pack), and these animals could no longer wade, even in 1 cm deep water. The strange thing though is the Zoopedia added water depth to possible methods of containing animals inside habitats in the same patch, when in reality required depths were removed in that very patch. This paradox always made me think the decision wasn't intentional, yet it has been over a year since the change.

In summary, yes, you can technically keep them contained even in 1 cm of water, given it is wide enough, for the time being at least.

Just remembered another Problem regarding swimming Animals. Animals changing into the Swimming Animation even though the Water is too shallow for it. I still remember from the Siberian Tiger Enclosure in one of my Zoos that there was Water that was probably 30-50cm deep (so obviously way too shallow) and they still started to swim there and of course they clipped into the Ground in a extremely annoying Way while doing so

I've wondered about this too. I have seen ungulates standing belly deep in a pool of water in zoos, presumably to cool off, and some terrestrial species like to play or stand in water more than others. But purposely going into deeper water and swimming around aimlessly the way they often do in game seems strange.

I did find this website, claiming that zebras will swim for fun and can actually defend themselves from crocodiles, even when swimming, but there are no references provided.

I agree it would be fun if animals could have personalities in the game. It's certainly true that some members of a given species, or even specific breed with domestic animals, enjoy playing in water more than others (I've had two Australian kelpie dogs, and one wouldn't even get his feet wet at the river, and the other dives right in) and have many other preferences and quirks too.

no I like it
well, a lot of others don't, due to it being extremely unrealistic and immersion breaking for these species. Having my river constantly flooded with hooved animals that realistically would not be swimming 24/7 for no reason is, honestly, extremely annoying. It's not realistic at all, and clearly many others agree.

If they fix this, there will likely be a new section for swim rates for various animals in the fdb files, so if you want swimming zebras, you can always mod them to swim again. ¯\(ツ)
