The (90s era) Daggerfall - before the Elder Scrolls series went in a completely different direction - is the closest I've seen not set in space. Still one of the largest continuous game maps in any game not set on interplanetary scales, a wide range of procedural terrain, cities, missions, etc. and a main plot which is there but completely ignoring it is fine (and it doesn't even have any rewards you'd miss).

There's a modern open source remake of the engine (you still need the original game files, though they're also free nowadays) which makes it a lot easier to play on modern hardware, and supports various modifications, some of which make it even more Elite-like, as well as alternative graphics if you aren't nostalgic for 90s-era pixelated sprites.

(It is also still a 90s first-person RPG with all the weird balance issues, obscure and buggy mechanics, and other such things that implies. But it's free, so if you hate it no loss)

Sid Meier’s Pirates! does a good job of doing Elite in the Caribbean if you don’t follow the main story bits (as does Assassin’s Creed Black Flag as a more modern version).

Euro Truck Simulator 2 for the cargo trading aspect.

Honestly though, we’re spoiled for choice when it comes to open-world games these days. Pretty much all these types of games trace their DNA back to original Elite (the original GTA games cited Elite as an inspiration) so I’d say just choose something you like the look of and avoid the main quest line. I’ve got stupid amounts of time in Zelda Breath of the Wild since it came out and I still haven’t finished off Ganon 😁

I think maybe Mount and Blade/ Bannerlord. You can trade between cities and set up caravans. You very gradually build up power and influence, it's pretty much open ended. You can play without the main quest. You can side with a faction or just stay neutral and do side jobs

The problem I have with Daggerfall Unity...aside from it not correctly importing my OG Daggerfall saves (some of which I've been playing on and off since the original release...I expect to start the main quest in another twenty or thirty years)...is that the main developer apparently prefers the menu/inventory screens to have a squashed aspect ratio, meaning there is no practical way for me to get the game and menu to both have the correct aspect ratio!

It's super nitpicky, I know, but incorrect aspect ratios drive me nuts.

That said, DOSBox-X suffices (be sure to limit it to ~60k cycles or the game won't behave correctly) for the original.

There's a game coming out, my nets not good enough to link to it called 'Naval Legends', a single player game from the guys who made Naval Action (the EvE with Wooden Ships game).

Likewise Microprose have a 'Pirates!'-lite game out in Early Access at the moment.

I’ve just watched the trailer for the Microprose one - looks interesting, but I hope they can sort out their vessel’s flags before the game releases 😁

(I spotted this sort of thing throughout the trailer!)

The Witcher 3, GTA V, Cyberpunk 2077 are some of the most immersive open worlds. Elder Scrolls Skyrim and Oblivion with mods are great.

Assassin's Creed Odyssey and AC Black Flag are often cheap on Steam.

Also entirely fine without mods.

Vanilla Skyrim (2011) and Oblivion (2006) are good games without mods. However, the graphics are very outdated and there's many bugs which can be fixed with mods. There's also mods that add quests and improve the gameplay.

For example:

While they are generally open worlds with a lot to explore, I don't think these games quite have the scale to be Elite-like titles. It takes about ten minutes to cross the entire map in these titles and climbing to any elevated vantage point lets you see most of the traversable world. Daggerfall, as cookie-cutter and repetitive as much of it can be, is at least big.

Yeah, those game worlds are much smaller than Daggerfall, but they're dense with content. Lots of stuff to do. The level of detail and immersion is much better than Daggerfall.

I settled on currently Medievil dynasty later maybe western dynasty.
Same sort of pace but on earth big open world and all sorts to do including trading etc
