You could Explore with a cobra there's no problem with that but if you want to cover some good distance i suggest getting an asp.

The two mandotory items you need is an Advanced scanner and an advanced surface scannet you should find these two items in High tech systems.

Get some repair kits if you're planning on traveling to the core or behind and strip your ship of everything unnecessary and maximise jump range.

Happy exploring and good luck :)

Do not write off the cobra as a long distance exploration ship, it's a very sturdy contender. See sig.

(First, remember that your progress, and discoveries will be wiped when the final release of the game releases. So, do it for the money now, and not to tag your name on anything. Its a hard pill to swallow. I will loose a LOT of discovery tags..)

Keep that ship, its good, but Maaaybe you want a upgrade your jump range, not for exlporing it self, but to get at your location.

What i do, and so far i really like it. Is to pick a spot on the Galaxy Map, go there, and explore that area.

What you basicly need is ... Nothing, strip your ship, make sure you max out your jump distance, you want a scanner, basic, or moderate. And you need an detail suface scanner (importand). You also need a fuel scoop, otherwise your trip will be short. Max out your Fuel tanks aswell.

Then go somewhere, anywhere.

The most change for Earth like worlds are with K, G, or F type of stars, but i did find earth likes also with other types..

Also, dont only rely on your scanners only, "eyeball" your system for "systems in Systems" lots of secrets to be discoverd inside a system. Just go in FSD, speed up, fly a bit around, and look in the background for stars that are moving against the background. This are other stars in your system, and they have their own planets.

Not all systems have this though, eventually you get a pretty good feeling if you should look for it or not.

Also you will notice there a lot of planets are already visited, but not surface scanned. this is also good money.

When picking your destination on the Galaxy map, try to fly down or up first, lots of people stay in the level they are entering the map. So lots of stars are already explored. Also, visiting a Nebula is cool, but EVERYBODY likes to visited nebulas.

I suggest just picking a random spot on +600ly away form populated space, and explore that area. Then move on. If you do this for about a week, and you scan al worthy planets, you come home with a couple of million credits.

Don't make the mistake I made for the first few weeks and think your ship can't get somewhere if you can't plot the route, as I only discovered this weekend that you can't plot a route further than 1000ly at a time. D'oh!
Had a lovely journey out to the Orion and Horsehead Nebulae this weekend in my new Asp, was a very beautiful trip. My only advice would be don't go cheap on the fuel scoop!
