Noob heading to Sag A

Greetings fellow commanders. Semi new player here and I'm bored of trading. Made a decent amount of cash so far ( around 5 mil ) and selling slaves is weighing on my mind.

I'd love to see the milky ways center so figured what the hell. I'll sell the type 6 and pick up a diamond back Explorer. Yes I know it's not the optimal ship but it's the best I can afford, so I've got a few questions.

The dangers of deep exploration. Running out of fuel mostly. Are the chances of me not being able to scoop fuel common?

Do I need to be careful plotting routes ?

I've heard of binary star systems. Can they fry you that quickly you gotta worry about them ?

Ship fitting. Figured best fsd fuel scoop fuel tank and scanners are all I really need.

Is scanning each system you jump into the best way to go money wise ?

Any other advice you great explorers can give me?

If you look ahead on your route for scooping you should have no real issues. And there are the fuel rats as a last fallback. You can come across fields of brown dwarfs - the best thing to do is to move up or down the galactic plane until you are out of it.

Close binaries are a problem when you hit them, yes. I have over 13K jumps and have hit that problem perhaps three times. So they happen but are very rare.

Depends what you mean by 'best way to go money wise'. If you want to maximise your money, don't explore. Think of it as a bonus on top of the exploration that you want to do. In terms of money per hour, the 'best' way is probably to jump and honk and jump, that is, do not scan anything. That seems to defeat the point of exploring to me. Many in fast travel mode will jump and hon and scan the entry star and jump again. Others will jump and honk, scan the entry star and peek at the system view and visit some objects if they look promising. Work out your own style.

Eveegodd, is it possible to see your DBX build? How have you equipped her?

Ever used this? I've found it invaluable https://coriolis.io/

For close binaries, pack heatsinks. Also useful if interdicted and your attacker is using thermal shock effects. Here's a possible build you could go for.. If you don't intend to land at all replace the vehicle hangar with an AFMU for field repairs.

As for fuel, you don't need extra tanks, in fact I consider them a useless dead weight that just decrease your single jump range for no real benefit - I went beyond Beagle Point and back with reduced fuel capacity and had no problems whatsoever.

Hay, don't knock the DBE! It's a great ship.

Good luck on your trip Cmdr...by the time you get back you won't be a noob ;)

I'm not entirely sure on build and can't check because I'm at work, but I've got a 22ly jump range and the best scoop and fsd I could afford. Gonna change out a few items to get it a Lil higher but I'm mostly broke now. Have just enough for insurance.

I'll have to make do with what I currently have. Maybe do a shorter run, sell the data, and optimize it after.

I'll post build in a few hours when I get home. Thanks for the advice.

22ly does seem quite a bit less than the DBX is capable of...in my opinion getting the best FSD and scoop it's possible to buy - rather than the best you can afford - is essential on such a long trip, even if this means slogging it out trading for a while to make the cash.

Here's how I'd set a DBX up (I'm by NO means an expert, and I fully expect someone else will disagree with me shortly :D ) but for what it's worth:

If you're running Horizons and planning on landing: https://coriolis.io/outfit/diamondback_explorer/0p5tdFflddisdf5---02---3248v62f2i.Iw1-kA==.Aw1-kA==

If you're not and/or you aren't: https://coriolis.io/outfit/diamondback_explorer/0p5tdFflddisdf5---02---32480l2f2i.Iw1-kA==.Aw1-kA==

Grind a bit until you can afford an Asp. DBX can't fit an SRV in explorer trim.

Always bring a repair module. If your canopy starts to crack without one, you are dead.

Hmmm never thought about a t6. Pretty sure I can buy that entire setup.

Is there a loss in money when selling your mods / ship back to the outfitter ?

You don't lose anything on modules, you lose a bit on the hull though. Sell the modules first, or refit the cheapest you can before selling a ship as noted above.

There is also an expedition leaving for Jaques Station, which is not that far from SagA. Exploring with others turned out to be great fun!

- I always check the star im jumping before making the actual jump. Its nice to know if you are jumping into a white dwarf or a T Tauri and you can avoid gettint into brown dwarfs fields.

- They wont fry you to dead but they can damage your hull and/or canopy if you are unlucky, you can carry some heatsinks if you want. They´re uncommon though and even if you jump into one of those you don´t always spawn inside the second star which is the thing that builds up your heat.

- High metal, metallic, water worlds and earth-like worlds (in that order) are worth scanning, the other planets are not.

Thank you very much for the replies.

Decided to hold off on my journey for a bit until I could properly fit the ship. Only another 4 or 5 million to go!

Gonna take a crack at long range hauler missions or go back to selling slaves. If the money's quick enough may just go with an asp;)

You can't go wrong with an Asp, mate.

If you befriend a single minor faction running missions for them you can get quite decent payouts for small loads going in the 90 to 150 LY range and you won't have to be part of the slave trade.

Good luck, my friend.

It's a great journey and will really test your patience and mettle, but well worth it. I think from a technical point of view, everybody else has already given you great advice. My only suggestion is that you relax. It's an EXTREMELY long journey, and at times you'll feel fed up, bored, and a little lonely. I found it quite a psychological trip and was starting to regret my choice about 10,000 LY out of the bubble. It got better once I started to enjoy the views and the ride, and I let my curiosity take me on little diversions. Once you stop thinking about the journey back, it becomes enjoyable.

A few more pointers:

I didn't land too much on planets, so I regretted bringing an SRV with me. It depends what you want to do, but it's worth bearing that in mind.
If you want to go to Beagle point, you'll need something with at least a jump range of 34LY. You don't want to get to that point only to find your ship can't make the last jump.
Bring Auto repair units. You'll need them.
Dump modules you don't need. You basically want to be an empty Coca-Cola can hurtling through space as fast as possible.
When you jump, remember to throttle back if you have a HOTAS. The routine of jumping between mini-points of interest will lead to boredom and that leads to carelessness. Throttle down after the jump so you don't Emergency Stop and cause damage to your ship. You don't want a cracked canopy 27,000LY away from any station or help.
Bring the best Fuel Scoop you can afford. Worth every penny.
Dump weapons. If you get an ASP explorer nobody can touch you. Just submit, then boost away from interdictions before jumping. Once you're about 2000 LY from the bubble, you won't see anybody.
Last bit of advice, don't panic if you find yourself in a stick situation. Calm down, use the tools you have and the equipment you've brought with you, and you'll find a way out of it.

This is your Walk About, and the journey will change you, Commander [smile]

Good luck!

I have recently got back from exploring (to and from sag a*) and it was a great experience I did a video series with all my mishapps along the way if you want to check it out its here https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLYlwy0o8QJuEN6Bt7Uu8vSTL7vya7pc_t

I only got into two sticky situations with binaries but the risk was worth the reward!

CMDR PLATER out.
