Newcomer / Intro Noob: jumped to where there's no gas... thanks for playing

Long jump run... thought next system would have a station or so to pick up gas... no, not so much. So I hyper-jumped out of range of everything. I arrived where there was nowhere to buy gas. It's a tough way to teach a noob... commit suicide and start over.. The ship should have something you have to override, that warns... if you jump there, you'll be S.O.L... and game over. Have a nice day. It should not be so easy to jump beyond any way to get gas... super frustration.... learning curve. I'm about to run out of gas and will have to start all over.

It does, its called a fuel guage. When you lock onto a target system the gauge will highlight the amount of fuel the jump will take if completed. Does your car have something you have to override to keep you from running out of gas? Cause mine doesn't. I have to be smart enough to fill the tank before it runs out.:)

Also be sure that you don't use your last credit to buy cargo or supplies. You need to keep an amount of credits equal to about 10% of the cost of your ship and equipment. If you get killed you will need that money to pay the insurance deductible, otherwise you will lose everything and have to start over with the free Sidewinder. :D

um, you have a distress signal that can call a ship that will sell you fuel. right hand panel under the functions tab

don't feel like a noob, it happens to the best of us.
my most recent death was because i ran out of gas a few days ago. was low on soup so took a detour to a system whit a station to refuel, but running on fumes i discovered to my horror that the station was 100ly away. i ran out of gas whit a few Ly left to go.

if we don't like this to happen we can protect ourself by getting a fuel scoop so we can refuel on stars.
basic ones are cheap so anyone can get them, however we have to sacrifice a slot for them.
so its a choice to make, run safe and equip a fuel scoop or run dangerous and go whit out.

Well, I refused to suicide... ran out of fuel... then suffocated to death. Game allowed me to rebuy my "old" ship config and start back at last dock I was at. I lost my cargo. $35K worth of stuff, but I get my old ship back, and $6K of credits I had... so much better than "start over" with new ship and 1000c. Learning curve for sure. I'll be more careful next time to MAKE SURE I can buy gas, b/c the game will allow you to jump wherev you want.... regardless of the consequences. Ok... now to build up that money again...

That was removed when fuel scoops were introduced.

OP: You are out of luck. Next time bing a fuel scoop along, they are dirt cheap (309 cr) and allow you to fill up at a star by making low passes.

That's part of the "roguelike" fun... the stupid deaths.
Once you get taught a lesson the hard way, you wont forget it. Especially when you don't have enough for insurance and must restart from scratch... been there, done that... quite a lot!

Actually, you first lesson was: in case of doubt, alt-tab to the forum and search it!

oh, they removed the distress signal? damn, I was planning on making a long trip later on and just using that as an emergency pit stop. good thing I didn't

Welcome to Elite Dangerous, Commander ;) running out of fuel is a rite of passage - we've mostly all done it.

Next on the list is hitting boost by mistake when landing in a statport. You're not a real Elite pilot until you've decorated the walls of a station with you ship at least once. :D

bwahahaha.... I have to laugh. Found a reasonably good cargo run to make... filled out my cargo hold with what would bring a good price where I was going... only to have dastardly Space Pirates interdict me out of Ludicrous speed and deflowered me. The took it all. haha. Nice first day. I'm not complaining... it's funny. Playing SOLO... so it was AI that attacked me. At least they just took my booty and left me alive.... battered... wet and scared... but able to make it to port.. heh

Another tip - if I'm not mistaken and seeing things, systems that possess vestiges of civilization (stations) seem to have names in whiter/bolder text in the Galaxy map. Empty, probably uninhabited Anarchy systems, seem to have a grayer/dimmer text color. That may help you plan your routes.

Welcome and best of luck out there; fly safe!

understandable

Best plan at the start is to stay in the "cluster" of stars right around where you started for awhile. (Everyone starts in a different place -- where are you?) Get your feet wet. Fastest way to get credits in my experience is to take missions on the bulletin board. After awhile you can buy a fuel scoop and put it in place of your cargo bay in order to go exploring. Then you just fly around the star after jump to collect fuel, being careful not to get too hot. Then you never run out of fuel, because most stars are like our sun -- nice and yellow and easy to get fuel from. HTH.

Fuel scooping pro-tip: a Tauri class star looks like you can scoop from it, but you can't - if fuel scoop suddenly refuses to work for no obvious reason, check the star class.

Is it possible to bring hydrogen fuel along in your cargo and refuel from cargo in mid flight like in old Elite II?

I always look on the systems map into where I am jumping to ensure there is a station or outpost, and ensure a 25% reserve in your tank. Dont rely on fuel scoops, you could fly into a system where the star a brown thing and cant be scooped, again check on the sytem map

It happened to me yesterday as well. I explored one system fully and wanted to move 20 LY away to sell the data. I went to some empty anarchy systems with nothing but stars. No fuel scoop, so I decided to see what happens when I run out of fuel. I highly recommend new players like me to stick to the free Sidewinder for some time and get some experience getting it blown up while trying new things. I've played EVE Online for quite some time and being blown to pieces is just part of your day there.
