Currently you have to remember them (or write them down), but at some time in the future FDev are going to add a bookmarking system.

Yep'. 1.6 is due to add bookmarks. So you should only have a few weeks to wait before they become available.
Right now you have to remember. Some people would buy Sidewinders and use the "Stored Ship" icon as a bookmark, but in the next update we get actual bookmarks. And the ability to name them.
I wonder how much I will get from selling off all my Sidey Placemarkers? Then again is it worth the time running around the entire bubble.

Or just buy a ship and drop it off at that station such as eagle or viper for good combat sites, hauler for good trade sites etc

A lot of different trade routes. A lot of them I no longer use.

You should probably get rid of them anyways for their uselessness. I would have a serious OCD about cleaning my Galaxy Map up.
I really just don't want to fly around selling them. The bubble looks like a red sea. It would take me a month just to fly around deleting them.
With 2.1 this will be fixed. In the meantime some players use sidewinders as bookmarks in systems.
I couldn't handle it.
After getting my Ship Hoarder Achievement I flew around and sold everything. I couldn't handle having Sidey bookmarks. Left one at each CG I participated in. But if I hadn't been back since I left a Sidey there in the first place, why was it so important to remember?
I have my home system, know where the nearest Pristine is, the closest LYR High Tech, best trade routes near me, best trade routes not near me, and I have EDDB and Inara. The CG's are posted when current.
About the only thing I would use Sidey Bookmarks for now would be marking Rare Commodity locations, because looking at an analog list doesn't give the same perspective as a 3-D map.
Huh...I might just do that. How did I go from Anti-Sidey Bookmark to seriously considering it again...?

There is a way...
Go to Galactic Map, find the system you need to remember then take a Sharpie and draw an arrow on your TV/monitor.
THEN, whenever you go to the map the arrow will point the way.
Erm, please note this post was only for non-rookies, besides the question had already been answered. Anyone reading this far, or taking my advice, deserves what they get!

I have close to 40 Sidewinder bookmarks in the galaxy map. :S I would just reset my commander to get rid of all of those ships if it didn't reset my naval ranks, lol.
