Hello everyone,
Sorry to bother all you vets with silly questions, but I wasn't sure where else to turn. I just started playing this incredible game last night. I played for about 5 hours and tho I really didn't make any progress, I had a blast.
While at work today, I figured I'd see if I could resolve that issue of not making any progress by probing the minds of those who actually know better.
First off, I'm not just going in blind here. Before playing I read completely through Ragingteapot's wonderful Beginners Guide, watched every video in jb_hazed's Welcome to Multiplayer series, lurked /r/EliteDangerous for a few days, and scanned through the mostly empty Wiki.
I know enough to get around, but there are still what feels like huge gaps in my knowledge that are preventing me from being productive. I can fly around, accept missions, and make other ships go boom... but I feel like everything I run into is random chance.
So, I'll give an example of how something played out last night and hopefully you fine folks can point me in the right direction. I'll place my actual questions in quotes to make it easier to read.
I spawn in fresh and dock my slick Sidewinder in Azeban City. Need to make some cash to get rollin, so I take a mission that is just 'Shoot down 3 Federation ships in Dahan/Eranin'.
On my way back to Azeban, I stop at a few unidentified signals. One is a Fed who just immediately gets ****** and opens fire (I killed him).
Sorry for the wall of text... I very much appreciate anyone who takes the time to read and assist me.

After fumbling around in random directions for a bit, I find a 'Federation distress signal'. I'm thinkin 'aw yiss... so poor sap outta gas and lookin for help gonna be one of my bounties'. NOPE. Giant dreadnaught and like 30 fighters doin they biz. Doesn't matter, tho, some of them are Feds and I get my kills. (Didn't realize til afterwards that if I chose a faction while there I'd have gotten cash for each kill, but thats find I guess.)First issue: I know that I need to find a 'conflict zone' to get these kills, but how do I find them? Do I just pop into supercruise and look for a 'conflict zone' to pop into my navigation list?
On my way back to Azeban, I stop at a few unidentified signals. One is a Fed who just immediately gets ****** and opens fire (I killed him).
Another is just a pile of oil ripe for the taking. Now, I know that anything I just scoop out of space is considered 'stolen'. But I have no idea how to go anywhere with it without getting caught or how to find a black market to sell it at.If I get fined/wanted for killing Feds, how do I clear that so I can dock in a Federation station?
Lastly, and I think this is just a bug... what is the easiest way to figure out where to go for a mission? Right now my 'System(s)' section in the mission log looks like a bugged garble... Does it normally tell me exactly where to go or just a general area?Could someone explain to me how to locate the black markets and what I can do to avoid fines and such on my way there?
