Newcomer / Intro Noob to Noob advice

OK... So I have been playing for a week... Have a semi upgraded Adder with 120k of silver.. Get snatched and before I could react I'm gone.. From 210k credits to 90. Man that took the wind out. I decided to go ahead and try what the vets have been saying... Go to the Nav beacon and scan... I quickly noticed that there was plenty of help there.. The feds were shooting at a viper expert wanted... I targeted it and waited until his shields were almost gone then jumped in the fray.. Got 23k for the kill with little risk... So all tell I made about 60k in about an hour of hanging around and scanning... If the ship is expert just wait until you help starts the fight...

You know you could also just go into USS and scan for bounties there. You can also find valuable Black Market items like platinum. Found and excellent system named Poriti I believe and it has 2 outpost. One of these outposts has a BM so I can sell my stolen goods and the other is aligned with the fed. so I can cash in my bounties there. It's a really nice system to start in and live if your into that.

Well you need to cash it in at a black market. Only certain stations and outposts have them and you find out if they have one in the contacts tab and it should have a tab saying black market. If you are not scanned then your won't become wanted, but I would recommend going to outposts since stations are patrolled by security.

You will receive a fine if scanned by system authority (not a wanted status). Often more than the cargo is worth.
If bounty hunting, you're better off leaving it alone. At USS you will scoop it up, but that ends your bounty hunting till you can unload it unless you wish to risk dropping into a USS with system authority, getting scanned and then a fine. Most of the time there isn't enough to make it worth your while. However if you go to Anarchy systems, you can drop in and out USS and scoop to your hearts desire. then jump to a system with a black market station or outpost and get paid. If you don't know how to avoid scans at a station, then go to an outpost.
If at a NAV beacon, the SA drop in all the time and slap you with a fine while you are scooping dropped cargo. Sometimes you get away with it but more often than not, they are there when you least want them.
If you get a fine and think, ok I might as well pick up more, you get additional fines. It's a no win situation.
It stresses me out sometimes to see platinum, palladium, indi bourbon, imperial slaves...etc and have to leave it. I make more bounty hunting, especially when SA drops in and hammers me with 20k fine for 30K of stolen goods.

So when I scoop cargo and it says stolen. Can I cash it in anywhere without becoming wanted?

That stuff becomes marked as "stolen" when you scoop it. You cannot sell stolen goods via the commodities tab. You can only sell them on the black market. As long as you dock at a station or outpost that has a black market without being scanned, I don't think you can encounter any problems like becoming wanted or losing rep.

It seems I get scanned at every station. I don't think I will bother with picking up cargo.

go to silent running on approach to avoid being scanned i belive

If you're going to use silent running, practice getting into a station with that before you try it with cargo. Silent running works by preventing heat from venting. If you aren't careful this can result in damage to your ship or even its destruction... and you can still get scanned, silent running just makes it less likely.

Another method not to get scanned required with practice is line up a good distance away to the docking bay and full throttle in (or boost) don't crash!!!
Be prepared to zero thrust as you enter the docking bay..

This has worked for me on several occasions..

Good Luck!!

Easiest way to avoid a scan in a small ship (up to Cobra)

Stop 7.5km away from the station and line yourself up directly in front of the slot.
Request docking.
Go full throttle towards the station keeping the nose pointed directly at the slot (do not boost, really, there is no need, don't do it!)
If you here "Scan detected" DO NOT PANIC! You could at this point release some chaff if you have a launcher, this is said to disrupt a scan (I don't know if this is true, never tried it).
About 2km out put down your landing gear. (This isn't absolutely necessary but it will slow you down enough to make any last minute directional adjustments a bit easier)
Once through the slot pull immediately up or down into the station (if a cop is scanning you this will break the scan lock)
Dock.
Breath.

Using this method I haven't been fined while smuggling for quite some time.

Aww man...I know the feeling! Im also somewhat of a newb. Been playing about 2-3 weeks now. Having a blast! - I once had a full bay of palladium and accidentally hit the boost and rammed an ASP - luckily i was close enough so I didnt die, but trust me when I say, EVERYONE does it lol

As far as what your doing, I know alot of people who have started trading right from day one and made all their money that way. Me, I tried that for about...an hour and then gave up. Instead, I go to the Nav Points or the Resource Extraction Sites and pick off many pirates. The key to making it truly successful is having a Kill Warrant Scanner - Make sure you scan them with the KWS before they die, if they're wanted in the current system, its like 90% chance they are wanted for the same amount or EVEN MORE in another system.

Keep doing that till you can afford whatever you want. You could save up for a Viper if you wanna keep doing the combat side of things, could go for a hauler if you want to try trading again - or straight to the cobra...Its a big boy (compared to viper and eagle etc.) but man that 44t of cargo space is nice

So, that KWS. I installed one on my adder. It was assigned #2 in the firing group. How do you use it? I noticed it was on the left of my hud when activated hardpoints. Do I aim at a ship and fire secondary? I was afraid to try in case it was perceived an attack. I removed it next stop. When I bought it I assumed it would just enhance the info from my normal sensor.

Yes, fire secondary. It is not considered a hostile act, but if they are wanted, they will start dodging around and preparing for combat

I have all weapons on #1, all scanners and interdicter on #2 (an extra Fire Group for low heat, but still all the scanners etc on #2)

My primary weapon group has lasers on button one and multi-cannons on button two. I have the KWS assigned to the same fire button as the lasers.

This is mainly because I think having the KWS on a seperate weapon group is too much hassle. Usually by the time shields are down the scan has completed.

So, you basically KWS ships that are wanted only? I might put it back on and play with it. I just dont want to risk being wanted. I have not researched being wanted yet to see how or if you can become unwanted :)

Yes I tend to hunt in non-anarchy systems so any ship I fire on is already identified as wanted, I should say that I do also have it mapped on it's own in another fire group for any time I do want to scan a clean ship for bounties elsewhere.

Yes, you need to fire secondary - To make sure I dont shoot someone I have the KWS set to my second fire group. Just set/lookup the controls to switch firegroups - it might not be necessary right away in a sidewinder/adder/eagle right away but, esp in the larger craft youll need the groups. So, in a normal situation, while I fly around like a Nav point or something, I will have the firegroup 2 open and each time I target a ship I start the Kill warrant scan. I do this so that if I find out their wanted from the normal passive scan, then my kill warrant scan is already almost done, then once complete i switch back and start firing.

One thing to note about the KWS is when you use it on a ship it says Complete! or something like that - I read somewhere that if you KWS another ship before you kill the first, then you wont get the extra bounty from the first ship - dunno if thats true, but just in case, kws, kill ship, next target, repeat...

If your wanted, then on the right side of the main screen where you can see your heat output, youll see a big WANTED word there - means your wanted in system - the quickest and easiest way to become un-wanted is to find the nearest outpost - dont go to a major starport that scans you - and under the contacts tab youll be able to find whatever fines/bounties are on your head. Pay them off and youll no longer be wanted. You can do this from a startport, but if you get scanned...buh bye!

The KWS does work for ships that arent wanted as well, but for now, yes, only KWS wanted ships until you get the hang of it. But trust me when i say, I have made soooo much more money in bounties by using the KWS - more than double most the time.

Yeah when you go to collect bounties after getting a KWS and using it at a RES, you find all sorts of payees hitting you up when you were just watching your federation bounty grow... The money is much better with it.
