Noob trying to figure this game out

Ok so I have been playing this game for about 4 days now. I am a twitch streamer and even streamed it a bit last night. First impressions are good. I REALLY love space sim and combat, MMO open world stuff. This game seems to be heading in the right direction.

But..(there is always a but right?)

Some parts of this game I. just. dont. get...

Last night I started with courier mission. I had someone in my chat briefly explain to me how these work. Basically you accept the mission, the stuff lands in your cargo. You set your destination and go. Before this I was trying to figure out how to get or buy the items the courier wanted. Problem solved right? Not so much, figuring this out opened a multitude of other issues. I take off for whatever system, STYX I think. I warp in, immediately get inderdicted and engaged. I try to fight, land a few shots but am destroyed by what Im guessing is another player. First thought was ''cool PVP" then it was "my god there is no PVP regulation in this game" similar to EVE which has high and low sec space. I guess you can just get your OP ship, go to the newbie zone and pop off newbies without fear of NPC retribution??

Then I say, "ok, lets go try and do a combat mission" I accept a "Kill 2 civilian ships" mission. Seems easy enough. I leave the station and then Im like "umm....where the hell do I find Civilian ships" and what identifies them. The same very helpful viewer in my channel says, "you either have to find War zones" or "find unidentified signals". Im like "ok how do I find these" he replies, "well, you just gotta kinda fly around Nav points and hope for the best". So I do, and I find a ship. This is an NPC ship I think because it has a regular name like Bob Jones or whatever and not Commander Backer (which I dont know how to change btw) so I figure I am on the right track. I fire, we engage in some combat, eventually he extends, repowers his shield and flies straight at me, guns blazing. Eventually destroying me. Disappointed I am back in the station and say, "ok well maybe we just need to get the ship fitted with better equipment. Lets just do courier missions" I pick another courier mission and head off. I arrive at my destination, ask for permission to dock, and am denied. Then I look and see that Im wanted....wait, why am I wanted again?? I am told that I must go back to the original station to pay the fine. I do, yet I am still wanted in other systems. Then I find out its a federation wide wanted level. Great everyone hates me....

I dont feel this game's learning curve is that high, I mean my god I ran a Corp. in EVE. But if my ship isnt good enough to engage in fights, and the gear I need to get lives in another station, yet I can't get to these stations because some OP is camping the stations with their Cobra's popping newbs off, or I am wanted for some random reason that I cannot pay off. Whats the point of this game again?

Im sorry, but I REALLY want to like this game, and 75 dollar hit it took on my bank account I am forcing myself to like it. But Im just not getting it.

1. How do I know which ships I can engage or not engage while in combat?

2. How do I pay of Federation wide fines?

3. Do I ALWAYS need to live in fear of overpowered PVP encounters, EVERYWHERE I GO?

4. Which station is the best place to upgrade your ship (sidewinder)? every station I go to there are either nothing for me, or its like 1 option.

Sorry for all of the lame noob questions, like I said I want to like this game. Im just struggling a bit.

I will be streaming this weekend so feel free and drop by if you would like to tell me how dumb I am or how I need to read some wiki with 500 lines of text before I attempt to survive in the universe. Or just say "TL;DR" :)

1. You can safely engage every ship that is wanted. Lock him up, wait for the scanner and look on the bottom left if it says wanted or clean. If you attack clean people you get a bounty on yourself. If he is wanted you can just go ahead attack him and later claim the bounty at the station in the same system. What you need to learn, like in EVE, is to learn the ships and possible fittings so you know which one you can attack and what kind of ships you should avoid.

2. On a Station just go to contacts. If you are wanted you should go and visit an outpost and not a station because the security vessels near the stations might scan and attack you.

3. No, you can also play solo. You can avoid interdictions by trying to keep your ship aligned with the escape vector. If someone just starts attacking and destroying you he will get a bounty on his head what makes him attractive to NPC's, security vessels and other players. There is also a PVE Group you can join so you play only with people who want to stay PvE. Just have a look at the group subforum here.

4. I don't think there is a best station, but you should look for industrial or high tech systems. You have the best chances of finding what you need there. For an Example: Asellus Primus. ;)

I would also add that whilst you can get zapped pretty much anywhere in open play pirates will lose rep with factions for doing so which will make the local authority vessels hostile to them. Check left of your scanner and see if it is an anarchy system or not as those obviously low security zones.

1 Like Robonator said, you're allowed to shoot wanteds, in anarcy systems you can shoot everyone except the authority ships without getting any bounties/fines.

2. you can pay any fines on any station through the pilots federation but it might cost more than going to the system and paying through the local security office contact.

3. If you're near a station(<5km) you're pretty safe, otherwise yes ... but you can always run, should really be the first thing they teach in tutorials imo :)
NPC ships will help you out after a little while if you get interdicted but surviving ~5 minutes might be a bit much to ask from all the new guys ...

4. Large population(maybe rich?) industrial and high tech worlds usually seem to have the best selection but at the moment it's bit of a scavenger hunt for the better modules :/

Just a quick caveat regarding point #3.

Right now the game is in beta - and everyone knows that a wipe is coming soon. That means that there are no long-term consequences for being aggressive, as your wanted status (and most everything else) will be reset in a short while. A player with a large bounty or bad rep will find it increasingly difficult to operate is systems where they are wanted. Presumably (we'll see how FD handles this), the core systems will be more legally developed and their security forces more aggressive about combating these "bad actors". This should provide newer players with a relatively safer area to fly in before they are trained enough to handle tougher action in the more distant systems where things are likely to be a little less law abiding... Again, that's the theory, we'll see how it works in practice.

Also, once the game is "live" there will be no resets, and building a wanted bounty (and bad faction rep) by attacking innocents will stay with you for a while, particularly if a player does it a lot. Just based on anecdotal evidence, I am guessing there are a number of players that are being more aggressive right now than they might be once reputation counts. (This is good during a beta, as players should be testing the limits of the system - not worrying about long term gameplay issues.)

I totally get this, and assumed this when I was going through it. It was just frustrating as you can imagine as a newbie trying to just survive in the universe :D

Im not against PVP, but clipping noobs in high sec space should have HEAVY consequences

Can you change the name of this thread? You're playing a limited beta. Not a full game. Had you bothered to do research more significant than watching some YouTube videos, you would understand a lot more than you apparently do. And FYI, being able to run a frikkin corp in Eve does not automagically mean you can deal with anything and everything else with immediate effect.

I can't remember exactly where and when I saw it, but I think FD said they are building in the rules to do this. Basically, if you are an Elite rated, heavily experienced pilot (player or NPC), and you decide to wander into a regulated system and blow away a bunch of innocent "Mostly Harmless" players, then you are going to receive a lot higher bounty on you than a low-rated flyer who does the same. In addition, if you get enough of a bounty on you, the local GalNet news briefings are going to start highlighting you as something akin to a "top 10 wanted" - hopefully advertising your value as a target and leading bounty hunters to start chasing you.

This won't help you much at the time of the initial attack - but the hope that is in the long-term it will squash most of the troublesome activity. (I would guess that any player who has taken the time to rise in rankings won't want to destroy their rep without heavily considering their actions. Then again, we're going to need the nefarious criminals to keep game life spicy...) Just remember, there's no guarantee that someone won't go nuts in the game, just as in real life. So, keep your insurance paid up and keep a watch out for anyone acting suspiciously - and stay away from the dangerous parts of town (anarchies) if you don't think you can handle the action. (Or, at least realize that you've taken a bold chance if you do go to the wrong side of the tracks and get caught.)

I wonder do you often buy unfinished games which are more expensive than any triple A release , just to stream it? I don´t get it. Does twitch streaming pay off through advertising or something?

You probably received a fine when you didn't complete your first Courier mission? Always check if there will be a Fine if the mission is not completed. Also check any timeframe for completing missions - sometimes if the mission has been around for a while without anyone accepting it, the time left could be very short. If you did get fines for the failed mission, after so long you get a Wanted status if the fines aren't paid. It's just a case of being aware of any times fines are incurred and paying them off as soon as possible. Keep an eye on your status on the right panel and the Transactions tab on the left panel which will show if any fines are due and how much time is left to pay them - if that time passes, you become Wanted, and still have to pay the fines as well as the bounty. I found out all this the hard way when I apparently blocked my own landing pad (!) at an outpost, incurring fines and finally being killed by the outpost.

I really hope this does not put you off the game because as you gain experience and become more aware of what is going on, you will become more careful to avoid similar situations. Also, as mentioned above, there is a PVE only group which I have joined - this won't stop NPC interdictions but should heavily reduce PCs attacking you. Otherwise there is always Solo mode, even if it's just for getting out of sticky situations like players camping outside a station killing everyone.

However you decide to play, I really hope you enjoy the game. :)

Just get out of Open and learn the game in Solo. You have played for a short time and are still learning the ropes. You should lose in many situations unless you actually get good at it.

Another thing to bear in mind with Courier missions is if you do run out of time but still have the cargo in your hold, it will then become marked Stolen, so you need to be aware of the fact next time you dock into a station. Make sure you go to a station with a Black Market and go stealth to avoid being scanned. If for any reason you can't offload the stolen cargo, be careful when leaving again to avoid another scan and further fines. They can soon mount up!

Finally! I was waiting for this post! Thank you sir for right the video game world and keep bizarro from destroying us.

Yes I realized the timing thing as well.

I really appreciate the advice from everyone! Starting a new game this extensive with a learning curve can be daunting. But obviously this community is here to help which is why I posted here :)

Nope I didnt buy this just to stream it. I bought it because I was interested in it. I knew about ED from years ago and knew they were remaking it. Most of the circles I associate with on Twitch are Star Citizen Fanboys, which is fine.

I wanted to be different, so...here I am :D

Welcome Commander and good on you for streaming. You will get the odd player Commander who is tooled up and hunting easy prey.

Don't let it put you off. It's an astonishing, brutal, rewarding experience.

Hope to see you out there.

Really? I've got to say that if you were actually waiting for that post you would have had plenty of time to formulate an effective answer. I have to be honest, your response lacks anything resembling lucidity.
