Best way to start is to look for BB missions that want you to take something somewhere.
Example: 'No hold space required' documents etc

Don't forget to look for multiple missions to the same place.

if you're interested in combat go out there and blow up some pirates, the cash will come in nice and fast and you'll have a new ship before you know it :)

Buy a really mangy, ill looking dog and keep him by your side while playing melancholic tunes on a violin, some kind of skin disease or lack of limbs may help :D

Scan whenever you have the opportunity (except asteroids, which are worthless). Even if you're not intending to play as an explorer, you can sell the data - free money.
