When I'm exploring, and I see on the system map that no-one has been there before
Do I get credited with the "first discovered by" immediately, or do I need to make it back to sell the data first?

Do I get credited with the "first discovered by" immediately, or do I need to make it back to sell the data first?

You must return and sell the data to a system. When you do so, a window will appear stating that you are the first to discover the planet(s).

And if you die, you lose all of your data. So stay alive!
