Nope... still got poor audio quality on Rift headphones.

The perceived wisdom is to put an Inateck USB3.x PCIe card in your rig and all your popping and crackling in your headset will stop.

Did that, but, the sound is still awful. Most noticeable on entry/exit from spaceports (BASS Notes) and when in combat with lots of action going on.

I have the rift sensors on the Inateck card, and the Headset USB cable in a USB3 port on the MoBo.

But its awful.

Ticket time, or are there other tricks I can try.

Running my rig pre-rift installation had no such audio glitching on my headphones.

All suggestions gratefully received.

Rig is AMD8350 4.0Ghz with 16GB RAM and an MSI derived AMD r9 390 GFX card with 8GB. This should be "sweet" but alas, NO!

It sounds like ticket time. Could be a bad connection in the cable - jiggling it around may get it to work temporarily - heard that worked before. I assume it's a new unit and it never worked.

I used to run a sound mixing desk and PA for a few friends bands.
If sound doesnt sound right, try playing a piece of music you like and know has good bass and treble range,
while wearing the Rift headphones , adjust your soundcard's equalizer (bass , midrange, treble, higher frequencies/white noise, like steam etc)
and see if that makes any difference while playing Elite. Most soundcards have this, windows included.
DONT use any sound-schemes like Delay or Ampitheatre , you want a raw true sound.
A physics teacher at school once mentioned that certain radio stations (like Classic FM in UK) transmitted in extreme high quality
and many sound technicians used them as a reference for other PA work.
Maybe worth a try. :)

Stupid question...

Have you get a set of earbuds/headphones that you can plug in to the audio out of your PC for the sake of testing? NOT USB headphones, just the normal 3.5mm jack style ones.

Z...

I've been using APO Equalizer, and Peace UI to control the Rift audio. It works wonders as I find the mids a bit hollow, and the bass lacking. Just a little change on each makes a massive difference.

APO - https://sourceforge.net/projects/equalizerapo/
Peace UI - https://sourceforge.net/projects/peace-equalizer-apo-extension/

'Scuse my ignorance. Will using 3rd party apps interfere with the Rift's built in software surround tech?

If not, what settings have used for the software you mentioned. (Your description of the headphones' sound so precisely matched my thoughts on it!)

Thanks!

I had this issue with mine and solved it by going into the properties of the Rift Headphones in Playback Devices.

In Advanced tab It was set at "2 channel, 16 bit, 48000 Hz (DVD Quality)", changed it to "2 channel, 16 bit, 44100 Hz (CD Quality).

Worked for me :) I've not had any popping and crackling since.

Nope, it simply affects the frequency bands, the surround is untouched :)
