Not a Fuel Rat but.......

A friend of a friend was on my TS and he is sort of new to the game. His Credit making idea is, to do long range smuggling. To make a long story short he ran out of fuel with 0 scoopable stars around him. We,on coms, had him shut down all systems except Life support and we came to his rescue, some 300 LY where we were bounty farming.....Pretty cool vid of fuel transfer and me coming out of SC right behind Dark8261 and our new friend. See....open doesn't Have to be about PvP....there is a satisfaction about helping others.....~S~ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R7HaS0ucnoI

Managed a rescue once myself. You don't have to be a Fuel Rat to do it, and it is kind of fulfilling. I imagine more so if it's a difficult rescue.

I have done/tried this twice.

One of my friends ran out of fuel on the way back to the station after bounty hunting in an FDL, not used to the rubbish fuel tank I fear. No probs I thought - just pop a fuel transfer controller on, get him into normal space everything turned off and at the main menu - in game voice still works. Roll forward 200LY and 20 minutes - 5 of which wasted on searching in the wrong system (I am such an idiot sometimes), in normal space - my friend ahead of me fuel limpets launched. Alas timing was poor he exploded with with the fuel limpets en-route. Felt bad - but had to laugh.

Learnt for the 2nd time - helping a friend new to the game. It went much better and no explosion.

I goofed and ran out of fuel once (fell asleep in SC and drifted past the station I was planning to refuel at, out into deep space. Woke up, tried to get back to the station.. ran out of fuel on the boundary of the NFZ.) Sent up the ratsignal, had help in minutes. They are good people.

Its a good feeling helping others.

To be a rat doesn't mean that you have to live the life and nothing else in game. Rat when you like, do other stuff when you like.

The Fuel Rats are probably one of the best emergent gameplay features to come out of this game so far.

I really think highly of the Fuel Rats and I admire them for what they do, but after hanging out on their IRC for a two nights I really don't want to be one.

More power to them though.

Speaking as a part-time fuel rat (more cheerleader than rat) I'm sorry to hear that, although everyone is of course free to make their own decisions and we accept it isn't something for everyone.
Although any feedback as to why is welcome, if you wish via PM or whatever and I'll pass it along if there's anything we can change to make it more friendly or more awesome or whatever. :)

You can still contribute without over doing it. I spend very little time in the IRC or in game at all tbh as my time is very full and short but I do like to do my bit when I can. You can still be a Rat without commiting to much.

If I had to air my grievences Alex I personally used to spend much more time in there when it was a much smaller concern, I do feel that the Rats have been a victim of their own success somewhat and have gotten very big now which selfishly makes your personal constribution feel a little less important in the big picture as the rescues we used to enjoy where 'you were the only ship for LYs" hardly ever happens as because of FR coverage now there is likely to be several other rats nearer than you are and even if you are the nearest there is likely 3 or 4 others just as close.

As an alternative there are of course BGS fuel rat stuff you can do to help grow the mischeif around fuellum!

I am starting a loose group online affiliated with a gaming group that has been around for over 20 years....I just asked permission to set up a division of the 19TH AG. here, on the PC version of ED. So I have to decline joining the Rats But,maybe the Fuel Rats and us can be allies....eitherway we will continue to help out anyway we can.....PEACE......~S~
