Ships Not as bad as I thought it would be

'k so after flying a bit in the Asp Scout, I thought I'd try the Viper IV. And, overall, it's pretty good as a missions ship. Despite only having a class A3 max power distributor, it copes with 2x 1GG pulse plus 2x 2FG pulse (my favoured loadout, as it doesn't have ammo to run out and is flexible, plus most ships can cope with the thermal load OK). Decent jump range, enough space to 16 cargo if you want (under 16 can limit the cargo based missions).

Downsides - slow yaw rate, and poor maneuverability in general restrict it when it comes to fighting, had a NPC cobra Mk III outflying me at one point. That said, you can usually out-think the NPCs but a good pilot in an eagle or even a sidey would probably take it, simply by staying in the blind spot. Also, and this is a failing it shares with the Asp, the hardpoint position is annoying - even with gimbals you only get all 4 lasers to bear in a very narrow window. Would prefer all the points on the top or bottom of the hull. There's also a lack of utility mounts.

But still, not a bad ship, after all, and more useful for missions than it seemed at first.

So I outfitted a Viper MK4 for combat and it is a beast! Class 4A sheild with A rated power plant and distributor mean sheilds stay on and strong longer....Mirrored hull and I added hull upgrades to all open slots except one class 2 SCB...Class A Frameshift drive with current set up gets me 18ly jumps so i can respond to war zones and powerplay crimezones/military strikes quickly...used it last night and it is awesome...

Here is my current build...

I hope the link went through...if not ill try again.

I was surprised at the jump range and the amount of armour she can support.
I found the maunervability a little difficult when facing other small ships but was able to get by with FAoff and gimballed weapons.
Overall I'd say the MKIV is a solid mid level ship

Less maneuverable ships cope with more maneuverable ships by backpedaling.

I gotta say im in the same boat
Was kinda put off the viper mk IV by all the reviews and hate on the forums, but did some extensive flying with it over the weekend, and i gotta say ive gotten very attached to this ship.
I love my cobra, and this is basically a cousin with MUCH better weapon convergence, and a respectable jump range being a small combat ship.

This is the build im running:

I was doing some missions/federation rank grinding, and absolutely had a blast with this load out
I never felt too slow, was able to brave sir robin away when required, and easily took on large ships

Never had a problem keeping my fixed beams on target (and spent most of my game time so far with gimballed beams, first time really trying fixed weapons)

All in all, a very fun ship to fly, amazing hard point convergence, and capable of doing most missions i attempted easily, went from 40% CPO to nearly 90%, still a ways off from rear admiral (i need a corvette) but sloooowly getting there

just my 0.02$, dont always trust the negative reviews, and try it out yourself, you just might grow to like this ship very much :)

Nice write up Alexei +1

I had a blast flying this last night when winging up with a more casual friend in a has res.

It's best when fighting bigger ships i feel, that way you maximise the toughness advantage while minimising the slow turning.

Fighting small ships can be annoying but there are ways round it (back pedal or use a turret/gimbal, i find a 1Turret beam works well.)

So yeah, fun ship, definitely a Cobra3 alternative and don't let the moaners put you off

Would it be fair to say the Viper MKIV is a cheaper alternative to a Vulture? Or does the Vulture outperform in any particular area so much that it makes these a bad comparison? I've not flown either...my Clipper has never made me want for anything.

It's definitely not a vulture. Definitely not a vulture. The two are very, very, very different in just about everything but line speed.

The way it tanks damage and handles, it reminds of a mini Python. It's a good ship, just not my cup of tea.

oh aye, nothing like a vulture. Mind you, getting the spec right on the vulture is quite hard - especially, if you build the vulture for decent fighting, you lose out on jump range

Yup, I like it much better then the other mk iv ship. I cam make a short range explorer (under 1000ly) build that still gets me over 25lys max range and fully armed and a lander.

Just picked one up yesterday. Toying with different load outs, but over all not bad. Seems to be a more "tank" version of the MK III. I am working towards a Vulture, but needed something to keep things "fresh" in game. The Mark IV is a good step.

I'm configuring mine for planetary landings and exploration but am doing delivery missions too. Ship is heavier than what I'm used to (Sidewinder) but it handles quite well. Working my way to a Keelback and this beauty of a ship will definitely get me there.

Stumbled upon this excellent video , it gives a good idea of the Mk4's maneuverability.

Count me into the "surprisingly positive reaction" club.

I just went from a Mk3 to a Mk4. The low maneuverability rating is deceptive: in practice it seems to turn as fast or maybe even faster when right in the blue zone. And although the top speed isn't as good, it accelerates just as fast.

While the Mk3 struggles to stay under the "optimal weight" for its C3 thrusters, the Mk4 can easily stay extremely far under optimal and gain the turn rate increases that come with it.

I had planned on trying it out only long enough to do a Cherets run (no way I was going to fly that far in a Mk3!). Now, I think I'll stick with it for a while and see how things go.

I"m posting this video since it's very relevant to your comment. Just disregard the commentary since it looks at the mk4 in a pure fighter perspective - not the best way to view this excellent multi-role ship.

Btw, there was a rare prototype made that was supposed to be an improvement over the YT-1300 - the Corellian freighter model Han Solo heavily modified to turn it into the Millenium Falcon. The YT-2000 (Otana) had heavier standard shields , stronger weapons (two dual laser turrets) than most civilian freighters, as well as being speedier & more maneuverable for a ship in it's class (light freighter). It was viewed by Imperial officials with suspicion (and rightly so, the game plan of it's maker was to help the Rebellion).

Too bad the mk4 doesn't have the dual pilot/copilot the Otana has ( can't carry more passengers btw). If things hand turned out differently in the Star Wars universe this would have been the standard fighter-bomber of the rebels. The Viper mk4 is the closest thing ED has to the Otana.

I absolutely LOVE the Viper MKIV.
Not only does it look amazing, but the fact that it barely receives any love makes it even more important for me.

But why the hell does the MKIV has not a single livery on the store?
I would love to customize it. Was there every a livery on sale or am I just not finding it?
