Not being able to scan biological or geological "Notable Signals"

I am currently on a exploration quest (35% into Ranger) trying to get to Elite. During my travels I have encoutered anomloies within the game. Using the FSS in one system it highlighted "something of interest (can't remember the exact wording)" which I investigated; these were Purpurem Metalic Crystals and showed up within my contacts and allowed me to scan them, which duely recorded them on my Codex (I think I may have recieved a Codex payment - I have just over 50K in credits for something). I then went onto to visit the Seagull Nebula, and performed my first surface scans (I wished I knew about SS when I was mining on route to my Trading Elite) these highlighted "Notable Signals - Biological" - which I was able to get close to (and photograph) but I was not able to scan them or even get acknowledgement that I had recorded them - nothing appeared on my Codex giving me credit for a least a confirmation. The same has happened for numerous "Notable Signals - Geological" encounters. The question is - Am I failing to do something to record these, is this a feature of the game or have I encountered an issue?

I am now trying to returned back to the "bubble" but have also encountered problems around Barnards Star (unknown pass required) - I can't seem to find a route home - so I am going to be out longer than I thought (hope there is no limit to scaned data  ).

Some pictures... (I can identify these items through Codex - but it I can access it at the momment)

Good Point - and the chances are I haven't . Problem that I have got is that the new version has just downloaded and left me unable to check. My Discovery Scan is longer bound to a fire group (which is not how I left before the download) and the Composition Scanner is bounded into two fire groups (again not how I left it). So from your implied question I should be using the Composition Scanner, which I certainly did with the Purpureum thingys, I think I would have used the Composition Scanner on the "notable signals" - but not sure now (the only thing would the datalink scanner - but that would have been odd). Next time I encounter "notable signals" - I will ensure I use the Composition Scanner (which is now bound to a fire group) and see how that goes.

Yep, sounds exactly like the problem. New bindings not configured should have or should have had a ( ! ) on them in your Settings options as a reminder to bind a key to these, as well as binding your fire groups, though there was no in-game message or indicator to do this, other than the absence of these devices from any fire group.

I can confirm though that these can be scanned with the Composition Scanner - not Discovery or Data Link. This will net you the Codex entry for these things. I found my own Lagrange point last night inhabited by crystals and had no problems scanning, and they were entered into my Codex accordingly.
