Not Cross-platform play, but cross-platform saves?

My debate about when to buy Elite: Dangerous is reaching a head. I had nearly convinced myself to buy the beta when the game released. I got several other friends interested in it, but only a few would actually be able to play. Then the Xbox One version was announced, suddenly several more people would be able to play. Now, I've heard that it's more or less confirmed that there will not be cross-platform play, but since this is essentially an MMO and the saves are all server side, will I be able to access my same account/saves if I were to get it on both PC and Xbox? I may be in the minority here, but I would be more than willing to buy two copies if I could play on PC to experience the game with the Rift, and on Xbox to play with my friends, without having to put all the time and effort into managing two different characters.

Long story short, will I be able to use the same account and save games on both a PC and an Xbox version of the game? If that feature is confirmed I'll be buying the game this weekend.

I too would like to know if this will happen. I already have it for my PC, but playing with my friends on Xbox would be awesome without having to start completely from scratch.

I have not read anything official that says this. Unless I've missed an official statement, the whole "cross platform play will not happen" is an unsubstantiated rumour. FD have not said anything either way, but I'd imagine they would far prefer to support only the one player galaxy

EDIT:

I’m also pleased to announce PC, Mac and Xbox One players will all share the same overarching narrative and galaxy state. That means even more players contributing to the wars, power struggles and Community Goals across the galaxy.

It might be, but I would prefer to leave console players on their own "mess", and not entangling with PC players

I would actually welcome players of other platforms to be able to play together with PC players. There are certain UI features that have very obviously been designed to accommodate console players (read: people who don't have a keyboard and mouse or HOTAS) that are slightly irritating for folks on PC.

For example, the entirety of the navigation and status panels could have been mouse controlled but instead they only work with a series of keybinds. When I first started playing I was vexed by this, but the decision to make a UI like this makes more sense when you take the typical console controller into consideration.

We are also limited to two fire buttons per group, and I imagine this is to utilize the trigger buttons on XBOX and PS4 controls while allowing the higher trigger buttons to switch between fire groups. It would be awfully nice if we could still get support for a third and fourth weapon trigger binding for a single group on PC. This would make flying ships like the FDL a lot more enjoyable.

Indeed. The interface has obviously been designed with multiple input device compatibility as a top consideration. Some might call this nerfing the PC, but I don't think that's the case. The HUD and side panels are pretty neutral as regards operation with different devices. Personally I don't like controllers, but that's only because I hardly ever use them. A HOTAS is the most immersive way to play by a country mile, and that's one of its main benefits.

As for the dissing of console players as a species - phooey. The more players the better, and this game is made in a way that will always reward the skilled player.

I haven't seen that new quote from Braben. It may herald good news, but at the time I originally posted articles like like these http://www.kitguru.net/gaming/matth...ming-to-xbox-one-but-wont-feature-cross-play/ , http://www.pcgamesn.com/elite-dange...a-of-cross-play-but-one-problem-looms-over-it , http://www.pcgamer.com/david-braben-explains-the-problem-with-elite-dangerous-cross-play/ , were all over the place.

I'm pretty sure the whole 'same world' part has been stated since the console version was announced, but that could easily mean that they will just be using the same galaxy with the same systems, planets, stations, etc. However, the part about having more people to do stuff, that makes it sound like they'll all be thrown in together, so that gives me hope.

A little late to the conversation myself, but this would be huge. No one is talking about cross platform play, and I completely understand why it's difficult to integrate xbox and pc players at the same time, but why can't I load my profile on both systems? I play on pc at certain locations (cottage, bedroom etc... ) and xbox in my family room. I hate having two accounts, and recently my xbox profile has exceeded my pc profile by far. Now that the Occulus Rift is coming I want to focus on pc play, but my profile is largely xbox based now.

Keep the xbox and pc players in seperate instances if this is easier server side, I'm fine with that, but let me logon to my account from either platform to continue my play please. I don't mind having bought both copies.
