Not possible to run Elite in 2D without Oculus Home.

Got me a Rift S, setup Elite to run in VR, nice.
To switch between 2D and VR i use EDProfiler, all fine.

But... if i switch to 2D (through EDProfiler or from within the game by setting HMD to off, Elite will crash while in game (quickly swapping between desktop and game) or not load if i don't have the Oculus service + Oculus Home running. I also have an icon set up to run Elite in No VR (so in 2D) without going through EDProfiler but this gives the same problem... starting to swap between desktop and game rapidly and crashing, sometimes just after launch, sometimes a few minutes in game. Always happens when the Oculus service + Oculus Home isn't running.

Q: Why does Elite in 2D needs the VR software running even when the game is setup to run in 2D? I guess Oculus Home takes over somehow.

Q: How to get back to a normal 2D setup without having to run Oculus service + Oculus Home (and without uninstalling Oculus software or re-installing Elite)?

Only way I could run without Oculus Home running was to uninstall it (tried 'cos I wasn't using the Rift much and was getting a lot of CTDs - didn't help so since reinstalled). I just let it run on start up of Windows and leave it there - doesn't seem to be doing any harm. Is there a particular reason you want to run Elite without Oculus Home running?

Fair enough - to be honest I think the Elite Launcher running behind the main game takes more GPU than Oculus Home when doing nothing so ...

I don't have a problem running it in the background if needed. I only wonder why it needs to run if i go 2D. It ran 2D without Oculus Home before i got into VR, it should do now also when i want to play 2D.

I use two small programs to run the ED without VR mode and to enable and disable the Oculus service. Work with both Oculus CV1 and Oculus S versions.
Installation is not necessary. Just put on the Desktop and run with a click of the mouse.
When disconnected, the helmet does not work and the glasses are not heated. Game can be played without VR. Once took a helmet – to “Enable” by mouse click.
Work with both Windows 7 (64-bit) and Windows 10 (64-bit). Programs are automatically run as Administrator. No settings are required. File names - talk about the functionality: Oculus_ON and Oculus_OFF.

Two things ... firstly when not using the Oculus you can turn off the Windows runtime service which drives the headset. To turn it off just run the following in a command prompt ..

net stop OVRService

.. and to turn it back on again ..

net start OVRService

For convenience you can have these commands as shortcuts on your desktop if you like.

The other thing which helps (and also prevents SteamVR from popping up when you don't want it) is to copy the shortcut you use to launch Elite, call it something like "Elite (no VR)" and add the "/novr" option to the end of the command in the properties of that shortcut.

I already have those just as the /novr option to the end of the command to run Elite in 2D.
It works but not entirely. It launches Elite in no VR mode but it crashes (sometimes quickly, sometimes after 10-15 mins or so) when Oculus Home doesn't run.
With the Oculus service set to off or on makes no differene, no Oculus Home in the background, Elite crashes.
