Not quite VR...

I still gag at the cost of a VR headset, as much as I loved it when I tried it in ED. I've got the PC to run it, but I really don't want to end up buying something that will more than likely get better in the second generation.

Anyway, I bought a Tobii 4c eye/headtracker instead for less than quarter of the price of a Rift or Vive after seeing ObsidianAnt's review of it...love it to bits. Something I always imagined may have been possible on the Xbox using Kinect...since the eyetracker isn't that much different tech wise even if it is a lot smaller... The difference it makes to playing E-D is quite something.

Damn you Mole... I was happy with looking at getting EDtracker, but now these videos...

Continue to look at EDTracker. The Tobii has a minimum, but still present, lag time response when compared to TrackIR (and probably EDTracker) that has LED tracking.

I did a write-up comparing the Tobii 4C and TrackIR some time back -> https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showt...i-4C-eye-tracker-vs-TrackIR-a-personal-review

To the OP - not to diminish whatever joy you're having, yes having experienced head/eye tracking for the first time will totally amaze you, and you will wonder how you ever managed to play without it, and now you will never imagine not having it turned on while playing.

ps: My Tobii 4C is now relegated to logging into Windows (face recognition), and more arcadey-type games eg Steep, Ghost Recon Wildlands etc. For ED I still use TrackIR.

Given the price of the EdTracker I'd still consider it, 3 degrees of tracking when used with the free OpenTrack.

I use EdTracker atop my Hyper-X headphones, a great combo.

Don't dismiss the ED tracker. I used one all the time until I went full VR. I think they are amazing for the price.

I did it the other way round, funnily enough. I bought the Vive when it came out, and played with it for a couple of weeks, but sold it on. I prefer playing E: D on the big screen (I use a projector), as I don't want to wear a large headset for hours on end. Also, I don't think the quality is quite up to scratch yet - if the next generation doubles the resolution per eye, that will be when VR really takes off (imo). :)

I don't always use ED Tracker, but when I'm going into a CZ or similar, I'll set it up then as it is hugely useful when fighting.

How does it work though? I mean, how far do you move your eyes to shift a panel, and what happens if you want to pick up that mug of tea?

If we're talking about Tobii (and head tracking in general), the screen would shift as your eyes/head shift to look at something else. If you want to pick up your mug of tea on your RIGHT, for example, the screen would turn right as if you're turning right (which you are, IRL). You pick up your mug, you turn back to look at your screen, and the tracker turns the screen back towards the left.

As for "how far", it depends on how you have configured the sensitivities in the respective s/w accompanying the tracker. Some people have it "not so sensitive" to allow for "deadzones", some have it super-sensitive where even a small shudder sends the screen shaking. Depends on the individual.

I've got used to flicking the disable/centre view button....I have it on mouse2 on my X52 pro throttle, flick of the button and it centres the view. It also goes a bit schizo if you cough, yawn or rub your eyes...can be nauseating if you forget to flick it off.

I also found it really annoying that the left and right function panels would flick on and off when looking around the cockpit. Having them set in the menu options to 'do nothing' when looked at solved the irritation. I still have the focus UI functions of course via the HOTAS so I'm not missing anything.

Once you get used to the screen moving around, it's really pretty intuitive. The eye tracking is for glancing around your HUD and the larger movements are done with the head tracker. Some of the jerky movement in my first vid was me coughing...then disabling the tracker...then flicking it back on when I jumped to supercruise.

I found ObsidianAnt's setup tutorial invaluable for the 4c...used his settings as a base line then tweaked them to suit my preferences. I'm not finding any view lag though...I had it too sensitive at first and found that every time I blinked, the screen was flicking down. The sensitivity settings are pretty good once you get a smooth curve...head tracker set to max sensitivity and eyetracker a lot less so.

Overall, I like the fact the 4c does both...and wirelessly.

Apart from the combat side against hapless NPC's, I find the 4c great for docking at a station, just flying through the slot and glancing around to spot the landing pad...checking for rogue T9's trying to pancake you as you head toward the slot too.
