As far as I can see, it isn't selectable in the backers app. It is just listed there under 'My Rewards'.

You're almost certainly assuming wrong.
Info that might be usefull;
I backed 40 in the kickstarter. (then paid 15 more later to get earlier access)
All I see is "NPC Name" in the reward list. Nothing else.
The kickstarter certainly shows a backer detail in its list though for even the first level;

Additionally the novel isnt in my rewards list either...a bug?

I have got the skull - which I agree doesn't exactly fit the idea of founders,early backers, or even day 1ers.
Doesn't seem like it would take more then an hour for someone in FD to knock up more appropriate textures.

From what I've gathered, you would have purchased extra decals during the Kickstarter period yes? You're picking those I imagine. No one I know of has been able to pick their actual "day 1 decal"
