Not so "innocent" innocents

I've been noticing something unusual. Not sure if this was happening before 1.06, but it just happened to me. I'm a bounty hunter, and I was cruising around Eranin when I saw an unidentified signal. As I dropped to impulse, I'm greeted by a sidewinder. I scan him and find that his record is "clean". Just as I'm about to leave, I get a message from him: "Give me all your cargo". So, of course, me flying in a fully loaded viper, I turn around and before he can react, I blow his shield to pieces and make a hole in his hull big enough to fit another sidewinder through it. The bad part is that I suddenly get a warning that now I'm a wanted person for attacking the sidewinder, even though he was robbing me (or at least tried to). "Maybe I should let them shoot me first, just in case", I thought. And so I did try. I gave the next "clean" sidewinder that tried to rob me a slight headstart, and let him drop my shields to 2/3, just to be sure. Afterwards, I turned around and force fed him enough laser power to restart a dead space station. Sadly, I still got the warning that I had just become more wanted (if that's a thing).
I find this pretty weird, since I'm acting in self defence. Am I the only one?

Could it be that after becoming wanted from shooting first with the first ship, then the second ship was firing at you legally, and thus he stayed 'clean' even though he fired first, because you were wanted?

I bet if you paid off your bounty after the first incident, the second would have gone much more like you wanted

Perhaps he was on his way to visit his sick NPC mother.

Maybe he just blurted out some random phrase, due to a condition.

And you KILLED him for it!

  • NPC had a clean status.
  • NPC wanted to try their hand at piracy and made some comments.
  • You shot them.
  • You're the criminal.

Had they shot you first and THEN you blew them up it would be a different story.

The innocent in the Sidewinder was rehearsing for a play which contained the line "Give me all your cargo" and they had inadvertently lift their comms on.

You need a dash cam. All the Russians have them for when people intentionally try to bounce off their vehicles looking for an insurance handout.

He'll shoot you after you don't drop your cargo making himself the criminal. Then you can defend yourself with... overwhelming justice.

this is a bug, in next version declaring piracy (requesting you to drop cargo) will be a crime and you can shoot before them, but for now you can only retaliate.

also i really hope they give those wannaby pirates a cargo scanner otherwise it's silly that they are attempting to rob me when i have nothing in my cargo bay or just 1 tonne of some cheap crap just to attract their attention ;)

please, developers, make AI smarter....

I agree, I have nothing in my cargo bay, and they still try to rob me. Seriously, kid, you'll have better luck asking for some change.

Also, to everyone saying that the NPC was rehearsing a play and accidentally opened the comms channel... It's the 34th century. They should know better. :p
