Not sure Frontier were wise.

Why is it a bad move? Sales skyrocketed, and that's the whole point. The more units they sell, the more people will complain, that's just statistics. If they aren't happy with the game and don't buy the expansions, well too bad for them, but they wouldn't have bought them anyway if the game hadn't been available on steam, so even considering that, it's still a good move for FD.

People claiming one "good"player is better than 100 stupid ones, need to consider that your 50 bucks are worth the same wether you're good or stupid.

Would have been interesting if Frontier had followed the same model, released the base game for free or very cheap and then charged real money for ships, wonder how people would have taken to that.

Very, VERY badly. It was suggested once. I still have hearing loss from the explosion ;)

I don't think pay to win does any game any good.
