Not sure how to do this..

So I took a different tack on the new colonization update thing.

1. I waited a while to see what the best method would be to establish a base even before thinking of building one. It seems to start with a "small outpost" is the way to go. As once it's done it takes the timer off so you have time to build out your system.
2. I found an out of the way station with tons of CMM composites, which wasn't really that hard to do compared to what many were saying, maybe I just got lucky...Dunno.
3. Moved my carrier into said system (that took AWHILE I must admit) and filled it with CMM's, Steel, Copper, Titanium. Basically all the larger quantity stuff. Now I'm looking to build.

So here's the problem (for me anyway). How do you go about finding a suitable, half decent system, to start the process. One with a few planets suitable to set down outposts later on in game?.

When I select the Colonization "unoccupied tab" on the galaxy map I find literally hundreds of systems, BUT I have no knowledge of what's IN those systems because I've never visited them. So I guess what I'm asking is, does the game expect me to travel from system to system to system hundreds of times over, map/scan them in a slim hope of finding one that meets the criteria and one that no one else has yet claimed yet?.

Or am I missing something here?

Inara, or EDSM. That will give you at least an idea of what's there, then find a few that look good and pop in and honk'em

I'm afraid that's the long and short of it. Personally, I wandered around for a couple of days trying to find a suitable place. In the end, I settled on somewhere more out of frustration than choice, but at least I got into a system with some nice mining spots. More frustrating was the inability to get in a carrier jump slot queue.

Good luck with your search :)

I found a dead player faction at the bottom of the bubble a couple of years ago and made it my home system, no one ever comes here but me

Jumped around in my ASP honking nearby systems until found one I liked using the map filter which says which systems you have and haven't visited

CMM Composite availability was quietly buffed Monday. They're plentiful now.

Yes, essentially. I wouldn't call it a slim hope, as there are a lot of suitable systems, and each system colonized only opens up more. I only scouted for a couple of hours before settling on a system because there was a fairly small sphere of space I wanted to be in. It didn't have many of the features I would have wanted, and has some that I'm not especially happy with, but if narrowing down the possibilities is difficult, maybe decide what region you want your colony to be in first and then scout there for something suitable?
