General / Off-Topic Not that many games, much less than the past

I was looking at E3 and thinking the PS4 looked awesome but not backwardly compatible and I learned my lesson to wait till about half way through a console life cycle to get a better product costing less with much much cheaper games.

I then got to thinking I fancy to get a game now for my PS3. A game I can play on the sofa or while walking on the treadmill.

So I started looking with a fairly big set of criteria which were:

1) No FPS games and nothing too violent or bloody. I have plenty of those games already and perhaps for my mental well being want something good for me and something to play with the kids around.
2) Not a kids focused game. What I mean is something not too kiddy like little big planet. I want something appeals to adults without being violent in a quentin tarentino way.
3) Not a puzzle game.
4) Uses the systems graphics and sound well.
5) Playable and addictive.
6) Not a sports game.
7) Not an indie game. Although I love indie games I was looking for a big title with decent graphics and lots of content.
8) Not a platformer.
9) Must not require a subscription or any costs after initial purchase.
10) No driving games.
11) Has to be an action game primarily, not dominating action perhaps, but I mean not something like Civ. Although I love Civ it is not what I look for at the moment.
12) It has to be good, so generally reviewed well.

After a fair bit of looking I did not find anything.

I will keep looking, but where are the side scrolling shooters that are done to modern standards? In the eighties there would have been lots of games that filled the above criteria.

ED will fill the above and so will Godus. But I was looking for something now on the PS3 that I could play on the sofa through the telly.

FPS, sports, kids and puzzle games totally dominate :(

Any suggestions?

Is Minecraft on PS3?

I am tempted to think about playing it again (I considered it not long ago, but decided not to)

EDIT:

Platforms

Personal computer versions
The PC was the original platform for Minecraft; the game runs on multiple operating systems including Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux.

Minecraft – Pocket Edition
On August 16, 2011, Minecraft – Pocket Edition was released for the Xperia Play on the Android Market as an early alpha version. It was then released for all other compatible devices on October 8, 2011.[68][69] An iOS version of Minecraft was released on November 17, 2011.[70] The port concentrates on the creative building and the primitive survival aspect of the game, and does not contain all the features of the PC release. On his Twitter account, Jens Bergensten noted that the Pocket Edition of Minecraft is written in C++ and not Java, due to iOS not being able to support Java.[71] Gradual updates are periodically released to bring the port closer to the PC version.[72]

Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition

Minecraft: Pi Edition

Minecraft: Xbox One Edition

Not PS3

Yes minecraft is cool, but I was looking for something with modern graphics (not retro).

Also I tried minecraft and I kinda did not get addicted to it like many others do perhaps I did not give it enough of a try?

Possibly. The best way to play it is to have the wiki open at the same time, so you can make progress a bit quicker. It takes a little while to realise the full scope of what is possible as well.

As for AAA titles, perhaps something like Starcraft 2?

Is starcraft 2 on PS3?

I did now find "big sky infinity" on ps3 which is ideal for me on the sofa or while on the treadmill. But it is download only I think, really I would like something like this that I can buy on a DRM free disc for the PS3.
Maybe it does not exist ?

Has a quick look at Steam list...

Violent, violent, indie, violent, boring, indie, violent, indie, violent, very violent, racing.... pretty much continues like that for 60 more games.

Plus a sprinkling of puzzlers and strategy games.

I really agree with the title of the thread seems that ten twenty years ago we had many more games that would fill that criteria i dont mind minecraft but it was the annoucement of this game that got me exvitd about a game release for the first time in a very long time to me far too many games are samey now just with slightly different weapons graphics or just this years rehash of a sports sim to me there ses to be a lack of imagination when it comes to REAL new game types after all even the most advanced first person shooter is doom with better graphics.. i look at ci, sim city gta 3 as a few examples of NEW games where something really different is introduced and other tjan minecraft recently ive seen nothing that blows me away or gives me that wow moment

Apparently it is, though not the disks.
as i understand it, you will have the entire catalog of PS3 games available to you via sonys cloud service, so all those games that you have downloaded already should still be available for you to play with.

This is sort of true. They will be available through Gai Kai, which is indeed a cloud-based streaming service that Sony own. Whether this service will be included as part of the existing PlayStation Plus subscription, a separate subscription of its own, or a pay-per-game model is still unknown though.

There are a lot of PlayStation 3 exclusives that I want to play from this generation though, so clarification from Sony on this would probably be enough to tempt me into a preorder. :)

I'm not surprised, you've pretty much discounted every single possible game.

You count Elite Dangerous even though technically that's an indie game (no publisher). You count Godus even though it's essentially a puzzle game.

You want a decently-budgeted action game that doesn't involve shooting, jumping, driving, sports, or puzzles. I literally cannot think of a single game that fits that description.

Nothing to do with modern games at all; your criteria are far too strict.

Too strict, well I just would like a Gradius style game on the PS3 on a disc (not a download) would be a start. Why not a download, well I seem to be having trouble getting sony to accept my card for credit, I suppose I may have to hassle my bank again.

A lot of RPGs are actually action games in disguise, much to my chagrin. Though it sounds like you're looking for an old fashioned arcade game? Don't think they make those anymore.

If you've got an older PS3 that will play PS2 games... there's Gradius V.

Otherwise it's a shame you can't do downloaded games as I suspect you'd enjoy Beat Hazard Ultra

There are tons of shmups released on disc. In fairness, they're mostly 360-based (if you want shmups the 360's your best bet), but if you can wait until next year then I'll see what I can do about getting you a free download for mine... :D

(Oh, but Gradius contains shooting, so... ;))

Thinking about it I have a Ouya on preorder and that may get me fixed if I can get it to connect, although I had rather I could get a current AAA title in that genre as opposed to lower budget and normally lighter indie titles.

And I will try to get my PS3 download working again.
