Nothing I can do as new player...advice please

I have mostly been playing the solo missions until now, but have planned to go multiplayer now, so this thread is a good read.

Being a total newbie, I have no idea how the choose sides stuff work. Is there a place I can read about it?

When in range of a conflict or distress signal, F2, last tab, "choose faction".

As discussed elsewhere try and identify which ships are on which faction before choosing.

Swap out the free pulse laser for 2 gimballed pulse lasers and try then. Make 40k in a cpl of hours last nite. If you get killed, alt+tab out and kill the process in task manager for now ( hope they fix that ) you will reload with your stuff back.

Do what your doing until you get to about 16k.
If you die, don't worry just take the free ship and keep building up the creds.

Buy 2 gimballed lasers for the Sidewinder.

Goto LP98-132 and to the asteroids.

Scan and kill NPC ships with a wanted status. Each kill will get you anywhere from 50 creds to 1500 creds. You can fairly easily make 10k or more in 30mins or less.

As soon as you see another player ship, run, until your more confident at fighting.

All power to engines, get out of there and hit your C key to engage warp as soon as possible. Don't wait, don't think about it, just go.

As soon as you enter warp, (well wait maybe 1 second) hit C again to drop back into the asteroid field, but usually a different instance.

This will also save your game. I'd recommend doing this semi regularly even if you don't see another player to save losing chunks of cash such as 15-20k due to a crash to desktop etc. As you can probably guess this has happened to me too many times to count.

Check for other players, if none, kill pirates, if you see one, get out of there etc.

This will get you into an Eagle at least in next to no time at all.

Am I doing something wrong?

Nope. This is a frustrating bug I'm afraid.
The other day I was only managing to kill something like 1 in 10 ships before they vanished.
I think the Great Soprendo has made an 80's come back and joined Elite.

It can be annoying when this happens, especially with the starter sidewinder with one gun. Stick with it, and build those creds up to get an extra pulse laser and eventually some gimballed lasers and they will die before they can escape much more often.

Not opening fire on them (especially in the Anarchy system, asteroid field) until your close, 500m or less, with full power to weps also helps a lot. More often than not you will kill the enemy before they even get 1000m from you....just watch your six and be aware of where the rocks are....

Hope your having more success now at least. Keep going and it just gets much much much easier, save often...
