Nothing new in store today - Does this mean Black Friday is a go, or a bust ???

Y'know, I was joking on the other thread, but apparently I totally called it. Already it begins... :D

Chances are, it'll follow the same schedule as last year:

  • Frontier won't address it on the forum because of their unrealistic expectation that people would remember when the Black Friday sales happened in all the preceding years.
  • A group of players will accuse Frontier of "shoddy business practices" because they would have put it up sooner.
  • Another group of players will remind the first group that Frontier has been perfectly consistent and reliable and there's no reason to panic.
  • Thursday night will arrive, and cross into Friday at midnight in the Eastern Standard timezone. Black Friday sales have not appeared on the store by 12:01am EST. Panic ensues.
  • Accusations will be made by some players that Frontier "does not care about" and "disrespects" their customers, and will cite as evidence that nothing has appeared in the store by 12:10am.
  • Reminders will be given by other players that at 12:10am EST it's still hours before people even wake up in the UK, and normal business hours come much later. And that "Black Friday" is the day after a holiday not celebrated at all in the EU.
  • By the time 12:am Friday reaches the Pacific Standard Timezone, full-blown panic will ensue, accusations and denial will set fire to the forums.
  • After what is honestly a fairly SHORT time later, at a reasonable hour, Frontier will put up their Black Friday sale stuff on the store, and there will be much rejoicing, spending, and tears of joy that Frontier has not forgotten the players, despite evidence showing there was no reason or cause to believe they had.
  • A few hours later, the first complaints about how much things cost on the Frontier store, despite there being no change in pricing from preceding years.
  • A week later, the first complaints about how some "missed out" on the sale and that it wasn't fair, and that the things should be available year round
  • A month later, everyone will forget all about it again till a week before next Black Friday. :D

Since everything we do in ED is online wouldn't it make more sense to have a Cyber Monday sale instead. I'm in the US and I leave Black Friday to the crazies. Seen too many bullets fly over the last television that was the pile of on sale items. Of course I've seen knock down fights over the last gallon of milk on the shelf when an impeding storm is coming too. I think they put something in our water over here.

I loathe what black Friday has become in the U.S. to retailers and shopping also. Always some crazy stories in the news now about baby carriages being run over, trampling to get into suddenly opened doors, shoppers getting into rage fights over first-come first pick items etc. It makes the U.S. look more disturbingly descending into third world nation squalor which it already generally is.

I'd actually wouldn't mind if Frontier postponed or just skipped over black Friday (does the UK even recognize Thanksgiving week? it seems to mean nothing to much of the rest of the world outside of the western hemisphere ) and just stick to more "holiday weeks countdowns" in Dec. with a silver, gold, or black paintjobs for a different ship each day.

I live in the US and never seen any fights or trampling of people. Those stories are few and scattered across the country. Most stores there is lines, but otherwise pretty civil

We usually get new stuff in the store by now (Thursday) - Does this mean FD is saving offerings for a Black Friday Special ?

What could we get? The new ships aren't out yet, but the Dolphin's black skin is long overdue.

Or is Black Friday a bust this year?

Tradition is a really really black paint job is available only one day a year, and that's tommorow, "Black Friday". Though I don't know when they will be open for bussiness and with the difference in time zones 0001 hours in Britland is I think about 1800 hours EST in the U.S. So unless they wait until they open in the morning their time, it will be about 2400 EST time.

Though they won't admit it, England celebrates Turkey Day almost as much at the American's do; But for a different reason. They got of all the Puritains. LOL

Nah, we've got you beat on the third world thing. By about a country mile.... I'd say more, but we don't have a First Amendment over here.

Thanksgiving doesn't really make a lot of sense elsewhere- whether it was a Canadian tradition celebrating a successful harvest with the indigenous population, or American Pilgrims creating a new holiday celebration for religious or morale reasons, it's very much a North American celebration. Good job, well done and great luck to you, but the holiday calendar is already pretty full on the other side of the pond.
In Europe, most festivals and celebrations come from pagan events getting co-opted by early Christians looking for new converts. There were a lot of old religions, so there are a lot of events to celebrate, even when we can't quite remember or agree on why we're doing it... still, any excuse for a party! :D

Today I was about to buy myself some new Anaconda skins, Anaconda ship kit and the Alliance name plates. Then I remembered the date and decided to just hold off.

Really? You must be too young to know of The Cabbage Patch Kid riots of 1983. That happened all over the US. We had some real slobber-knockers in Akron, over those dumb things. Police showed up in riot gear at Zayre's, Pennies and Toys R Us. Similar ridiculousness has happened every year since, somewhere. You just never know where the dime is going to drop. I refuse to go to Cleveland this time of year.

And don't forget the crazy drivers out there either. SUVs are 2.5 ton battering rams, itching to give friendly shoppers a free tour of the local ER. You've got better odds of survival playing open at a CG with a Hauler, than store hopping on Black Friday around here. Go to 's Sporting Goods, get an archery bulls eye to wear, and you're all set for Wal-Mart, Macy's and Kohl's. Anymore, I stay home during T-giving weekend-- without pay, if necessary.

As of 11:00 pm EST, nothing to report on Black Friday ship paints or discounts. It should be 4am GMT, if I counted time zones correctly.

Rooks o7
