Yes, it works sometimes, but not always. Often it just doesn't rotate. I suppose it depends on rotating speed of a planet.
Anyway, Nice finding CMDR!

Did you check if it's tidally locked? If memory serves, if it is, then it won't rotate. Also, this only works for landable bodies, the others don't rotate.

Yes, I was using this feature while exploring. Even though we haven't got the detailed one with a honk, this makes it possible to spot unique features without flying to these moons. You can spot deep canyons and high mountain ranges as well.
