Notoriety Discount

So, this morning I was mostly doing passenger missions out of Robigo (you know the ones) when low and behold I was "ganked".

Don't worry, this thread isn't about gankers in general, it's not a rant. I simply used the Old Duck method of having been the subject of their "content" once they are now blocked (essentially I'm dead to them).

Anyway, what I did notice was a notoriety discount on the rebuy screen of about 10% of my rebuy. When on earth did that appear? Granted, its been ages since I've seen the rebuy screen, but I've never noticed it before.

First I hear about. Sound like the design finally figured out that player to player combat is asymmetrical and decided to add a dab of cream to the punishment for losing a ship. Not that it changes anything in how the game is telling players how much they suck but baby steps are still steps.

I must say Old Duck is a genious. This is an ingenious idea of his and we should all follow it. You killed me, fine, it is Dangerous, right, and now I'm gone. Bye.

all fine until it screws up instancing for you, or other cmdrs ;)
Instead of blocking just learn from your mistake. Avoiding being ganked is actually quite easy.
I don't agree. If people don't want their instancing being screwed, they shouldn't go around killing people for no reason.

Otherwise I blame the whole problem on practically non-existent C&P. But until that is fixed, we do what we can to avoid being killed out of the blue.

And no, it is not as easy to avoid being ganked as you'd want me to believe. It is if you're expecting it, then you are on your toes and yes, you can usually avoid it. But after an hour of playing I definitely am not constantly checking on the radar any more. I've even been ganked at Sag-A. I got away, but still it felt like a violation of deep space calmness. That's what you get with a station nearby...

While I do find it a shame that it will screw up their instancing, quite frankly anyone winged up with them is doing the exact same thing as them, I'm cool with that.

I have just as much right to be in open as they do & I allowed them to extract their content of the day out of me, all one single shot of it.

In any case, I'm not ranting about being ganked, I dealt with that the Old Duck way.

It screws yours and other innocent Cmdrs instancing up :)
You're in an instance on your own and I jump into your instance I will see you. If your blocked Cmdrs a few mins later jump into the same system then they will be in a different instance. So by you blocking it affects who I see.

If your friend is in an instance with your blocked Cmdrs then you jump into the same system you won't see your friend, you'll be in your own instance...this then results in rage posts saying "I can't instance with my friends!!!"

Thats 3 years ago. Playing a game actually helps out forming an objective opinion about something. I like reading the rather uneducated drivel though :)

You're right, I know, I just think it's worth it.

There's "right", and then there's right. I've never had any instancing problems myself, despite all these "blocking destroys ED!" doomsayers. They sound like a certain ex-president going on about windmills killing birds by the millions. Sure, windmills kill birds, but it's a very rare event and it doesn't destroy the world and society like some think.

Thats all behind Frontiers abstractions, abstractions they build in order to create the game world we are living in. The whole point of an abstraction is to hide the underlying mechanics and to pull up a concept that appears to be doing what it is supposed to do.

Now, if those abstractions leak, thats Frontiers problem. You're not going to educate the whole player base what instances are, and how they are populated over a P2P network.

If you're a lone wolf then you're unlikely to even notice. If you have many people on your friends list, and/or wing up a lot, while visiting heavily populated systems like CG systems...then instancing can be a nightmare sometimes.

You're absolutely right. I only brought it up because a few people had the misconception that it only screws up the blocked Cmdrs instancing, when in reality it affects everyone.
Many have tried to educate the entire player base before...and failed :(

I often wonder whether the fact I'm sitting in my own instance (even in CG & Engineer systems) in Open more often than not has something to do with other players using the block function too liberally, given it's being suggested quite quickly when someone moans about getting their spaceship exploded in a computer game that features generous amounts of explosions of spaceships.

(I don't think anyone blocks me as I don't attack players, before anything feels like dropping to that conclusion :p)

And while I'm a lone wolf player in the game mostly, I do want to be instanced with other players including gankers - otherwise I may as well stick to Solo or PG, as Open increasingly feels like the former two :/

Being alone in an instance can't be blamed on blockers unless everyone is blocking you. At the very least you would need to be instanced with a blocker for his blocking of others to affect you. Now if you find that every time you go to Deciat it's just you and MickyG, then you could block MickyG, thus removing his block influence over you.

But let's be honest, the real reason you're all alone in ED is that everyone switched to playing SE :p

I should've been clearer, I'm not in an empty instance (though that also happens quite often, I blame FCs for that mostly) but usually come across one or two players that go about their business. The last time I was actively ganked was ages ago.

As for players having moved to other games (I'm no different, while I still play Elite regularly, FS2020 has gotten its hold on me again, and I shall be splurging some monies on a couple of DLC planes tonight! SE leaves me cold though I have to admit), that may be the case and it's somewhat reflected in my friend lists' stats, but the traffic numbers at least in the popular systems seem to be rather unaffected. Unless everyone is operating a bot army from Solo these days ;)
