Now that really hurts.

Hi,

I rarely have problems with the docking computer but this time is was really bad.[mad]

I was docking automatically with no problem as usual, looked away for a few moments and when I looked back my ship was jammed in the station superstructure and could not be unstuck in time.

Needles to say it was destroyed along with 240 Imperial slaves and a rebuy cost of over 6 mill.[mad][mad]

That was after last nights destruction of my ship by a Fer De Lance.

My fault I know as I should have ben keeping a better watch on what the docking computer was doing.

Yes I sucked the loss by the lance up and carried on but now I am having second thoughts about continuing as I don't think I have the stomach for any more losses....

I have submitted a bug report and do hope for my losses to be recovered, I shall have to wait and see.

240.. Python? If so, and you insist on using the docking computer, you can help yourself out by always putting 4 pips into shields before engaging the computer. That's enough in a Python to keep you alive in the instance of a docking computer meltdown... assuming you have a 200 or so MJ shield.

Sorry for your loss. Doesn't sound like a bug to me, but maybe support will investigate and find that it is. I hope you have better luck in future!

docking comps use pips. 4 to engines.

Really? I mean I know it happens all the time with the docking computer all the time but it's still a bug if a docking computer slams you into a wall at high speed or gets you stuck in the scenery.

Is it just me or every thread about the docking computer is about how it spazzed out and blew you up? Is there an advantage of using it?

It works better on some ships than others... I always found it worked flawlessly on the Anaconda but it went wrong most of the time when I had a T7.. With the Anaconda I used to trust it so much I'd go and make tea while it was docking. Of course I had a 1000MJ shield to so I figured I'd survive if it did go wrong..

The problem is most use it then go off for a tea break. Automation needs to be monitored to a certain extent, especially the ED docking computer. I'll use it every now and again, normally when I'm checking mission details or quickly plotting a route. All depends on the ship I'm flying and if it has spare slots

Yeah, I've noticed the docking computer doing strange things since the update. More than once, it just flew to the left once I was inside the station. I had to take control back and hover over my pad before it could land. Once, it got me stuck in the cage outside the station and a couple of times, it had me just hovering inside the station.

I found that I need to get my ship inside the station before engaging it to keep from getting stuck in the cage outside. I watch for strange maneuvers once I engage it inside. I don't know how well it works for the smaller ports, because I always manually fly to the pad before engaging the DC. It takes much less time that way.

So far, it's only gone braindead once on a planetary post. In that case, there was a tall structure that it evidently didn't see. I had to boost out of that to dislodge my ship.

Good luck on getting the credits back. From what I hear, FD are pretty good at doing that.

Oh ok, on bigger ship it seems to be more useful. I've been flying an Imperial Eagle for a while now and internals are scarce.

Funnily enough it's my mission runner Python & Anaconda that have DC's installed, haven't failed yet, although they don't get engaged very often.

The DC has been playing up since the patch... I've had it slam into the floor a few times and if you get to your pad number inside a station and anything in front of you trys to take off, the DC just stops and stares out the taking off craft... and it just happens to do the same back! I've had to use boosters to move away then it carrys on and lands...

When I use one I never look away. I've had to stop it from crashing right into buildings on surface ports and antennae on outposts, it can even go haywire after getting inside an Orbis station and start drifting around like a drunk. They can be convenient at times but you can't trust them 100%. Kinda like the computer on my desk :)

DC puts 4 pips to ENG, and 2 pips to SYS. I have a DC on some of my ships, but when I am approaching a large station I always pilot the ship fully through the mail slot before letting the DC take over.
