Now *that* was beautiful!

So finally managed to get my video card stable, & decided to hop back into the game.....& into a brand new Chieftain.

Well, maybe the stars have chosen to align today, but I got my first occurrence of a Chained Mission (outside of Donations) since about November of last year.....& not one, but two in a row!!!

One was apparently the result of Labour of Ethgreze ignoring the threatening message sent to them by Alioth Independents, so now the latter want me to scan one of the former's settlements for them.

The other one was an Assassination Mission spawning from a Black-Box Salvage. It seemed pretty straight forward, but its the fact it didn't that made the whole scenario so beautiful!

I dropped into Farrack, & headed towards the last known location of my quarry......only to be Interdicted by him en-route. So I submitted & proceeded to try & "tear him a new one". In spite of being Competent only, he put up an excellent fight.....but I was definitely winning. So, what does he do? He Hi Waked!!!! Luckily I had a Wake Scanner installed, & was able to track him to his destination. I found him pretty easily, & was very pleasantly surprised to see that he still had the same hull damage that he had before he jumped (though his shields were mostly restored).

Apparently this guy's a glutton for punishment, as he interdicted me *again*!!!! Again he put up a good fight, but I made fairly short work of him this time. My only fear was that, because I didn't take him down in the original system, that it wouldn't count towards completing the mission. Once again I was *pleasantly* surprised.

So I have to say that this mission-from go to woe-was *really* fun, & I hope we see more of it in the future.

The only things that might have improved this whole scenario might have been:

(1) if the black box salvage could have triggered a mission type other than Assassination. Variety is the spice of life.

(2) if my quarry had, after Hi-waking, led me into some kind of ambush at my new destination. Maybe dropping from Super-cruise into a Belt or Ring system, & playing a game of Cat & mouse........or catching up with some fellow pirates to gang up on me.

I really do hope these added levels of complexity turn up in later Chapters of Beyond.......but what I experienced tonight was actually pretty *awesome*!!! :)

Damn those pesky video cards, reminds of a time when I had this bus load of gold...

Tbh I really didn't think there could be a picture of a video card balancing somewhere precarious. But no, the internet.

Interestingly, tonight's experiences only make the absence of such experiences more glaring at other times.

I really would like to see Chained Missions be the norm, not the exception, with even 2-3 link chains being fairly regular!

Sounds like a good boost to the missions, especially your NPC not getting magically repaired.

Do you think his hi-waking out could have been triggered by you having a wake scanner fitted?

Not sure.....might have to test that out. Its just good to see some more persistence in the NPC's.....it bodes well for the future, especially in regards to potential Tier 2 NPC's.

Was that the Titan Z or whatever? You got ripped off, mate, if you bought it at the full price when it was released. Could have gotten 2 Titan Blacks for two-thirds of the price and gotten better performance and capability. Just saying.

Nvidia eventually came to their senses, somewhat, and lowered the price to a point which actually made some sense. Too late for some though, wanting to get the best and not knowing any better beyond marketing hype.

For those not in the know, the Titan Z is essentially two slightly underclocked Titan Black cards in SLI on one PCIe interface (same GPUs, same VRAM) and cost a third again more than them for some inexplicable reason while also being released later than them. Consumer trolling is all I could think of at the time.

Sorry for the tangent, but it still boggles my mind to this day.

...

I'd like to think that I'm at least somewhat responsible for them lowering the price, raising hell on the EVGA forums at the time. Gotta look out for my fellow gamers that aren't as much of a computer savvy nerd like me.

Anyway... As you were.

So it's worth chasing the ones that got away now. That's a good step in the right direction. Though now I'll need to add a wake scanner.

But I'd like to see more interaction with the victim NPCs after you rescue them. Currently they just jump out once you've refuelled them, without a thankyou and leaving their escort behind. I wonder if that's a bug, since convoy ships manage to take their escorts with them.

IIRC, you can at least now help to repair them, with repair limpets.

.
That's the only thing i somehow wish: to be able to bring fuel transfer limpets without messing up my setup. When gathering materials, i tend to sometimes drop into a distress call USS. After all the "defend a trader against pirate" distress call is great fun and breaks the monotony of looking for high grade emissions.
.
If i would -only- scan for high grades, i'd probably run mad, just like some others in the forum seem to do, but by also enjoying other USSes, it's actually nice gameplay. Unfortunately there's often also distress calls where there's a ship without fuel. And while my Chieftain (which is currently being engineered) does well for everythign else, it doesn't have the two slots spare to carry not only a limpet controller but also have the cargo hold for limpets.
.
Based on that, i think that it might actually be a nice upgrade of the game, if fuel transfer could be done by any ship, without needing limpets. (All other limpets have use to make money, for pirating and for combat, so using slots is justified in my eyes. But fuel transfer is no combat function and i'd really support all ships having some fuel transfer option without them. )
.

Yes there is a lot going on with signal sources also, threat levels are only a guideline now.
3.0 seems to have some nice game dynamics. Might be earning it's "Dangerous" label.

Lol, I have no idea! It was the only picture of a graphics card in an unstable position that the internets could give me :D

Fair enough. Bit of a tangent rate on my part. It does look like one to me though, and I can understand why someone might make a picture like that featuring it.

What was this thread about again? Emergent mission gameplay or some such? ;)

Well, it's nice to know it's working for some. Meanwhile I'm just farming some stuff for the Engineers. Not particularly immersive, but I'm enjoying messing about in an SRV (I've gotten to where I can use the turret and drive at the same time fairly well independently of each other, or to see where I'm going as needed*; hope it doesn't mess with my piloting skills too much), which I don't often do otherwise, and it's something to pass the time between things.

*Kind of makes me wish the gunner roles were more like this in multicrew, having independent orientation from the ship, but still being based on a turret type perspective, moving to gun perspectives as needed by players to keep targets in sight, and facilitating some cooperative communication between pilots and gunners.

Surely the rubber/air combo of the inflatable pool will keep them safe?

Surely...

As long as they're not the path of least resistance between the leads or the ground, they're more than likely not in too much danger, and even then likely not in mortal danger. Either way though, I certainly wouldn't recommend what they seem to be doing there.

I think the picture is likely a hoax and would be surprised if the fuse didn't trigger with the power strip in the water like that. Water does have some fair bit of resistance, but I'm not sure if it'd be enough here.
