Now this is *really* unfair!

I don't usually while about getting a bounty, but this one takes the biscuit for unfairness.

I scraped the guy's paint and got a 200Cr bounty on my head, fair enough -- but the someone else kills him but I get loaded with a nearly 6,000Cr bounty for his murder??? C'mon guys, really??

Vid follows.

And anyway, having looked at it frame by frame, it's almost impossible to see the guy before I scraped him. He was hidden behind my legitimate target, and my gimballed lasers slipped off the target, grazing him just as he appeared out from below. Okay, poo happens, I know -- but not getting nailed for his murder as well!

In this perticular case it was no more than an annoyance as I had to get away to an outpost PDQ, but it's another example of the flaw in this aspect of the game. Hopefully it will be resolved in the next update.

I suspect an NPC finished him off and since it was in the time window you got the 'credit' for killing him. hmm

Indeed, having no fine for small grazes is a great thing already, but the system is perfectible. Especially in this case, it's like you never get credit when you think you deserve it.

You might not have just scraped his paint. You may have opened up a hairline fracture, that caused a critical system failure and led to 99% loss of his ship integrity. You will never know..

Unfortunate, but you hit him twice with dual large beam lasers and probably took down at least 25% of his hull (he's only an Eagle and didn't have shields). Regardless of your definition of friendly fire, that wasn't it.

Ya its a shame the devs decided to get rid of the whole whoever kills it gets credit system and added the timer instead to make the game easier.
That's clearly what happened here I think, the magical timer after damage awarded you the kill

Ah! I haven't watched the vid. So the 'paint scraping' was done with lasers! Laser ablation I'd call it - very bad for paint, and the 3cm of metal underneath...

As I said, I have no problem with the 200Cr bounty and I recognise that this case was not FF. That was not my point.

how do you record these videos please?
I've got a NVidia 650m (laptop) with GE force experience loaded
I use Shadowplay that comes with GeForce Experience, and ffmpeg to snip out the bit I want.

I do think the system still needs a tweak, but gimballed weapons have the advantage that you can still hit things you're not aiming at, with the disadvantage that they have a tendency to hit things you're not aiming at.

Only if you've fired on a ship and done more than 5% damage in the last 10 minutes does it count as an attack, that's one way of fixing it that would be very time consuming to abuse.

I was going to post "check your targets" then I watched your video.

So I'm going to have to amend my reply "check your targets were possible, but (expletive deleted) happens so always fly insured".

You could exploit that to drop your targets shields and do 5% damage to your victim before you turned wanted and they could legally shoot you back, unfair advantage to the attacker.

It is also possible you killed the poor eagle with that dual large beam strike and he was just going through the "I am exploding now" phased over the 8 seconds, as some do.
Might just be me imaging it but as he passes over head does anyone else hear what might be the beginning of the secondary explosions?

The nose was drifting down but the vapor trails were steady, looks like a dead ship to me.

I think that as he comes up and left your laser 'unlocks' and clips him once getting the Assault fine, then as it snaps back it just clips his wing again, and by the timing from then until to the point he dies I'd say that you'd (unluckily) already got him to zero health with the second hit. It was just the delay until he exploded and you got the murder charge.

All they really need to do is change FF to a fine not a bounty, and get rid of that everyone attacks you if you're wanted crap.
