I read a similar article the other day and what I could not get my head around is the sheer scale of the research.

Considering that the Milky way has an estimated 400 Billion stars according to the ED notes, that the research on this subject has looked at 26K "nearby" galaxies.
26,000!!!!!!!!!

That is a colossal number of stars to even start to comprehend.

Every Galaxy dies but not every Galaxy truly lives. Sorry couldn't resist. I do find this topic interesting but there are so many ways in which the universe will die (taking us with it in the process) and we haven't even figured out to not kill ourselves, let alone keep the universe from doing it for us. At least our Galaxy is still recycling hydrogen back into the ISM... For now. Hopefully this info will be useful to us someday if we ever learn how to manipulate galactic evolution. It certainly narrows the possibility of life in the universe with yet another hurdle.

They aren't scanning star by star like we do in game. They are simply using computers to data mine spectral data from galactic surveys. It's impressive deduction and painstaking work, but it's not 10^16 painstaking. More like 10^4.
