NPC AI at it's finest.

Just had an, erm, interesting demonstration of ED's AI at work.

Took a "Terrorist Assassination" mission.
Was flying a ship with an SLF.
Toddled off to some surface outpost to scan a datapoint to give me info' about the target's location.

Before I scanned the datapoint, I had a bit of an idea so I deployed my SLF.
Ordered my SLF to hold position about 5km away, went in, scanned the datapoint and the outpost became hostile and started shooting at me.
Ordered my SLF to engage.

SLF whizzes past me, targets a defence turret, fires off a mighty salvo at it.... and then craters into the ground next to it.

AI might need some tweaking prior to the release of Odyysey, I reckon.

Now that we are getting the PWA back, maybe it's time to add fissures to planets too... you know.. core mining.

I dont except my mechanic doing a bad job on my car because its "Hard to do" either.

Of course its hard to do, that why these people have training to do it. If they still arent up to par then work on it to fix it, you dont just go oh well its hard and ignore it. And the people pointing it out arent badguys for doing it either.

Do it whilst silent running, and they won't turn hostile.

I used to be an AI programmer and I have nothing but sympathy for AI programmers!

Anecdotally, my own experience was that the AI always seemed most promising -- "this is actually going to work!" -- very early on and the more you fixed it, the less realistic it seemed to be.

Have to say, doing the AI for Odyssey is a likely to be a whole new level of difficult because there are vast amounts of unpredictable things going on. Fingers crossed for them.

I can see that work. We are already using 100s of limpets because they Kamikaze into asteroids, ships and whatnot, might as well weaponize them and use them accordingly.
