NPC Bar & Grill

I've got a Krait outfitted and ready for mining. I'm ultimately interested to try VO mining but feel like a slow entry might be less intimidating in terms of the process. Which leads me to laser mining. Is this how you guys started ? What did you laser mine for when building your mining fortunes ?
Finally, I understand its best to start a ming session with an emptry hold while NPC's scan you, but do they return while you're actually mining ?

For Laser Mining, YMMV but just doing the missions for factions was what I did.
That kept it what I was look for vs just the Platinum Palladium and Painite in Metllaic rings

Re: NPCs Not usually, unless you are at a RES or log out and log back in

My advice would be to go straight for the Cores. The best guide I've found is the Popular Guide to Space Mining by Lance, which covers both styles.

Relative to Core mining, Laser mining relies on having more collector limpets and more refinery bins as well as different hardpoints of course. So your internal module setup will be quite different between the two. Laser mining lends itself to big ships, whereas core mining usually the mediums (certainly not a rule though).

Don't forget your limpets, whatever style you choose!

Laser mining is a good place to start. Bring along an abrasion blaster for surface deposits and sub-surface displacement missiles for sub-surface deposits. Once you've got the hang of that you should get a seismic charge launcher and crack open some 'roids for the diamonds and opals. Then you're making SERIOUS money!

If you start a session with an empty hold the npc pirates will fly off after they have scanned you. It's been a while since I did any laser mining, I just do core mining now and that involves flying away from your starting spot and scanning for core asteroids, and as I do so I leave the pirates behind, so they don't bother me. If you're laser mining it might be best to move a few km away from your starting spot before you start mining so you're away from those pesky pirates before you start filling your hold with the stuff that the pirates want!

Or you can do both: smash open the asteroid with your seismic charges, abrasion blast off the opals/diamonds/whatever (pretty much all core minerals are worth a LOT of credits except for bromellite, which is only worth around 8,500 cr per ton) then laser mine one of the 'roid chunks to get the last few goodies, including elements, which come in handy when you go see those engineering people.....That will save u some time driving round on planets looking for elements in your srv......
